Holset HY35 powered AWD DSM

A buddys project I'm pretty involved in. It's a 92 Laser RS AWD that will eventually be a Talon clone because Lasers are just ugly. 6 bolt 4g63 with 2g pistons (8.5:1cr), Comp Cams 101-200's, HY35 turbo at 25psi, PTE 1000's, Jackal native speed density engine management, Tial bov, yada, yada, yada.








Should be looking at HP in 400-450awhp range at the boost level. However, 35+psi is in its future.

I knew someone who had a Talon, the injectors started leaking and it had to be gone. Otherwise theyre kinda neat cars. Cool to see it making that much power though!

The 4g63 is an absolute monster. I THINK the record now is 1400hp. Its nothing to put one of these cars in the 300hp range. Hell, 700hp is the new 500hp for them. In all honesty, MOST modded DSM's are in the 300-400hp range. If they're not, the owners need to move on, lol.
Surprisingly, these cams in this motor sound tame. Disappointing really. I had 272 Web cams in mine and it was rowdy. I was getting gas one day and a guy actually asked if I had a v8 in the car. In his defense, it really did sound like it.

Thank you sir. These cars really are amazing. Gobs of power to be made, cheap to build, easy to work on, and they were built right here in the US. The only real problem with them is that the 5spd trannies might as well be made of glass. Not as bad as Subaru trannies but they are weak. They can be likened to N* engines. With the N* its not if but when is a head gonna lift. With a DSM its 'when is the tranny gonna grenade?' Now the autos, which have caught on big time in the DSM world, are darn near bulletproof. Personally though, I'm staying 5spd with the next one I build. Much more fun listening to a stutterbox just before a launch and hearing the 'no lift to shift' rev limiter between gears. I'll post up some pics of my DSM I just had to sell as well as the one about to buy.

When it came time to buy my first car, I had my heart set on a 95, or 96 maybe Eclipse Spyder. I wanted that car so bad, but the 'rents decided I didn't need it. Probably for the better, I would have done something stupid and wrecked the car or killed myself lol.

I'm gonna be completely honest with ya bud. No, they don't. Without getting really deep into the different variations of the 4g63, we'll just say that youve got to versions: 6 bolt 90-92.5, and 7 bolt 92.5-99 (remember, I'm keeping it simple). Six bolts don't crankwalk. Sure, its possible to crankwalk a 6 bolt but I've never seen nor heard of it happening. 95-96 seven bolts were the engines that were prone to crankwalk. Most of it is internet hype though. Would I take a chance on modifying a bone stock 7 bolt, no. But I wouldn't modify a bone stock 6 bolt either due to their age. These things are flippin old and most have been heavily abused and modified. I plan to do a stock short block 6 bolt rebuild with a 2g 7 bolt head for the 95 AWD I'm picking up.

Yea I don't know the specifics of them, just a little from what I have heard from local guys that are into them which is why I asked. So it is the later years then that are more prone to the crankwalk issue and not the earlier ones then, I was curious about that.
