Headlight mod

Post by Haulin ssei54 »

I was looking at some pics of bonnevilles online and I noticed a lot of people took he orange plastic out of the headlight for the blinker so it's a clear turn signal, I was curious how hard it was to do it myself?

Also, another option from clearing them is tinting the amber piece as well as the bulb glare caps. The cleared look is nice but I prefer the stealthy look of the tinted out lights now, but I did have a couple sets of cleared lights in mine and they also looked good.

Now did you tint them out yourself or have someone do it?

I pulled the lights apart just like I was going to clear them, but instead of throwing away the amber part, I sprayed it with VHT Nightshades spray tint. Also I removed the bulb glare caps and tinted them as well. However, I have found that the VHT doesn't work well on the bulb caps as it turns to a gold color over time from the heat of the bulbs, a high heat flat black paint would work much better there.

About half way down this page for how I did it

Does it give it a glossy tint or more of a flat tint?

It's a flat tint if you don't clear coat over it.

Has any one had any problums with the plastic turning yellow from this? I know that you could do it with a Ford Focus and it was ok, but that a Subaru WRX they were having problums with them turning yellow after baking them is why I ask.

Mine didn't turn because of the baking, but have because of the exposure to the elements.

What part was turning yellow and what do you mean by baking them?

I had an 05 Focus for a while and on the forum I was on they were doing the same thing to paint the outside area black (Kind of how the Bonneville is stock lol) and some one had mentioned an issue with the Subarus, so I looked into it and found out that the guys that were doing it to their WRX's had their lights turning Yellow in less then a month after baking them. They said it was something about the kind of plastic they used would age faster turning yellow much faster then normal if baked, or thats what they were saying any way. The guys doing it to their Focus's though were not having that problum at all so it just had me wondering about the lense cover for the Bonnevilles.

The lense covers themselves do oxidize and turn yellowish, but that's the only issue. All plastic lenses will do this. I have never heard of anyone baking their lights, some people put these headlights in the oven at about 200 degrees for a bit to soften the glue up but that isn't necessary if it is hot outside and either way that won't have any effect as to whether or not the headlights oxidize.

Thats what they were doing but they said it seemed to speed up the oxidization. But that was the only time I have heard of that. Sounds like its not a worry though for these.

I know all plastic will do this, I have done my fair share of sanding, and clear coating headlights to get rid of the yellow haha. I had to do it to my old Ranger once a year lol. I had a 95 Explorer that I had to do once a year also.

The taillights are a bit more complicated. The best way to do the tail lights it to cut a hole in the back and in some cases breaking the amber lens to remove it. Then you have to reseal the housing. There is a thread that covers the process just as there is for clearing the headlights.
