Hard start 1-5min after warm shutoff

Post by MattStrike »

'98 L67 (swap :violent1: )

Scenario: I stop at the gas station after the motor has reached 195 degrees. (doesn't matter if I pump gas)
If I try to restart within a few minutes, it won't start unless @ WOT (used to be clear flood mode on OBD-1)
If I wait about 10 minutes or so, it will startup like normal. Fuel pressure is a solid 42psi.
At startup where I have to put it at WOT, it smells terribly rich, and the idle takes about 15 seconds to drop, then it runs like normal, no problems.

I'm thinking I have an injector (or more) leaking.

It did this before fixing the SES light and after. So it shouldn't be related to the evap/vapor or EGR systems.

I have a terrible OBD2 scanner that works great on a 2002 Yukon for the emissions PIDs only (no extended PIDs) that won't stay connected to anything pre-2000, and it doesn't tell me jack to help.

Suggestions? I figure I've got a few weeks before the roads get salted and I switch DD's. Would be nice to fix this before it goes into hibernation.

If you haven't already done so, when the "no start" condition exists, pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator. Look and smell for the presence of raw gasoline in the hose. If gasoline is confirmed, change the FPR.

No fuel in pressure regulator.

Your fuel pump seems good.

How about the crank sensor? How many miles are on the swapped out motor. I had the same issue with my car only that it would happen at stop lights or in traffic. Had the crank sensor replaced and the issue stopped.

Just a thought
