Also, where do you buy the polishing supplies? Can I use my pneumatic D/A sander with those pads, or do I have to use the orbital polisher?

Once I dust my SSEi off I'll be trying this out... it needs it bad.

I cant speak for ryan in this case, but with proberly used sandpaper, a while car can be done with 3-5 sheets.

No you can not polish with a D/A sander.

and you need to do more than just dust a car before you do this kinda work...

It is VERY easy to screw up and go right through the paint wet-sanding. If you're not comfortable, don't attempt it...

Believe me, I'm not intending on jumping into this without proper preparation, information or supplies! I have spent many hours clay barring, polishing and waxing my current and prior cars. I have also done tons of wet sanding in my youth before the base/clear days.

I was curious how much 2000 grit wet sandpaper I would need.

I am looking at any way to take a little of the elbow grease out of polishing a big car like a Bonne, especially one as rough as mine! The problem I've found is that over the counter polishes just don't seem to have enough grit to get the bigger scratches out.

As Peter said with the sandpaper, so far I have only used two sheets (each cut in half to wrap around my sanding block) I really suggest that anyone that wants to attempt this level of work try first on an old junk yard fender or something that don't really matter if it gets messed up. Even if you wet sand fine then don't have the proper polishes pads and polisher your end result will still look hazy, dull, and full of wet sand marks. Wet sanding also doesn't take any of the elbow grease out of polishing, actually just the opposite. When I normally detail a car I usually spend on average about six to eight hours polishing the paint through the two or three steps, and with wet sanding then polishing this car I will easily have 20 hours into the paint alone.

Wake, as for my rates... exterior detail polishing only three step I usually charge about $300 depending on the size of the vehicle, and how much work I have to put into it to get the results the owner wants. If someone actually wanted me to go through all this work I would likely charge $500 - $600. While that seems like a lot of money, the amount of time it takes and the skills required to do the job right I wouldn't do it for any less.

Just a minor update, haven't touched the paint since the last update, been working on more important things for winter time. Got the blower motor working finally -- viewtopic.php?f=21&t=28175 also worked on getting the winter tires and wheels ready to go for it. They are the original gold crosslace wheels off of my old '93 SSEi that I painted all the gold a gunmetal color, but the silver areas were all corroded and nasty. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=15604

So, two of the tires had leaks in them, we found the bead and valvestems were leaking, so we pulled the tires off those wheels and I decided to clean up the wheels and throw some paint on them... I think they will look good! (tires are NOT cleaned yet lol)

Another small update, no pics right now, might put some up later.

After almost five years of owning the car, I finally got the cluster lens replaced. I pulled the lens off the cluster in the SE I picked up, gave it a quick polish by hand and put it in. It looks SOOO much better!

Also swapped the center console cover / arm rest with the one from the SE. Ours was cracked and looked pretty bad, the one from the SE looked like new :)

More wetsanding and polish work will be done / finished when we get good weather and I have time on a weekend.

They are the regular gold crosslace wheels from old 93 SSEi, I just painted them black. The chromes are back on the 03 SSEi now and those black crosslace wheels are on my 02 SLE.

If you seriously want some you could maybe find a set on craigslist, or if you make a good enough offer I would sell these.

Properly painting them is a b***h, mainly in regards to stripping the old material off. I can vouch for that, as can Curt (the place that he used for media blasting tried several times with their most aggressive medium, and that didn't even put a dent in the old paint). It's more epoxy than paint really.

If you want crosslaces to paint, look into the 96-99s. Those are mostly clearcoated.
