Now getting a randon surging tach and then die at stop sign

Post by Mac077 »

Since I had my radiator issue and replaced it I am now getting a random issue with my '00 SSEi stalling at stop signs/lights! Not all the time but at random times it will do it for a while until I shut it down and let it sit for a while. Any ideas? No messages thrown from the DIC or dash accept to check tire pressure! It is running rough when this happens too and it has been running rough for a while especially at very low RPM's. Thanks
2000 SSEi (Silver Eagle) cleared corners (before accident) new LIM gasket, drilled 180 T-stat, new plugs and wires, new valve cover gaskets, new Supercharger gasket, third brake light overlay. Hopefully soon to start more mods for performance. Also, 2005 White SE totally stock and will remain that way!

Almost sounds like a crank sensor to me.

Could my previous issue had anything to do with it and what exactly is it?

Probably not, but it is located behind the harmonic balancer on the crank. The very bottom pully in the center of the motor.

After it stalls and does not start, does the tach move while trying to start it?

It starts right up after it stalls, just stalls again at the next light, and at the next light, etc. unless I keep it revv'd

Fuel system problem perhaps? When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Have you ever replaced or at least cleaned your MAF sensor?

It looks like you've done a lot of work on your car; can we assume that all regular maintenance is up-to-date?

(Shooting from the hip here -- more-knowlegable folks may have a better idea.)

If it is not in gear (setting in the driveway) how does it idle? Do you have any way of checking the codes?

Could very well throw a code and not a light, for a variety of reasons :btruestory:
I'm interested in seeing how this plays out, its almost exactly what my 94 was doing...We never found out before it got hauled away...

Ok, more info...I just recently replaced the MAF sensor, just put the FWI back on after getting it smogged, just replaced the water pump and thermostat (180 drilled), just finished replacing the radiator (cracked on opposite side of filler), new belts...all within the last year or so. Fuel filter, plugs, wires were last done a couple of years ago when the LIM was done.
And another bit of info that I just thought about...it seems to run fine when cold. It has only done the stalling thing when it is hot outside and the engine is at temp. Hope this helps the thought juices!!

Perhaps a plugged cat? Is the performance really bad during this time, too?

You may be on to something there because my cat has been rattling for a while...it does run rougher during these times. I didn't realize it could make that much difference but it makes sense! I hate it because it was also replaced just a couple of years ago.

My dads old car had this same thing and it was the torque converter not working properly (locking or not unlocking cant remember) and it would stall the motor.

Ok, does Magnaflow make one for California emissions?? Because this last one sure didn't last long!

Good news is it wasn't the Cat...just had it checked and it was good to go. The rattling is apparently coming from the down pipe? Has anyone had this happen? Apparently the are double walled and something must have come loose on the inside?? Anybody???
If indeed that is the case does anyone have a down pipe they can sell me for a reasonable price? Haro, you got one handy?

The downpipe has a big bubble in it. This is actually the flex section and they do tend to leak.
