Re-Chroming wheels

Post by Sirhc »

Would I better off trying to re-chrome some wheels or just buying a new set??

Is it flaking off?

I think you'll be better off buying another set.

Yeah, its flaking off and I am starting to see rust so its kind of irritating to me. I wouldnt have any problems for these sets being my winter set at all, especially in Michigan.

Use those as winter rims, then wait for a good condition set to show up on e-bay, or get a set of aftermarket rims for summer use.

Can you get a close up pic? There should be no rust on those at all, there is nothing there to rust. Looks to me like they simply need a good cleaning.

Yup, I've turned some horrible looking rims into masterpieces with some polish.

That looks like crud to me, not rust. Give your wheels a good cleaning and polish with some good chrome polish. If it's still there, hit it with a little steel wool and some more polish. I was able to remove a little corrosion on my swoopies that way.

Definitely not rust, there is nothing to rust there, just built up dirt, crud, and brake dust.

A good chrome wheel cleaner and a soft brush should do the trick for the most part, if that don't take care of all of it, try a stiff bristle plastic brush, if that fails then try the steel wool (ONLY use #0000) but I would use the steel wool as a last resort. The Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish is also very good stuff, I have used that a lot on chrome as well and it really does the job. If you have a Mothers Power Ball, definitely use that and the polish and you will simply be amazed

I have some cleaner that would clean those right up in a quick hurry, but not worth the two hour drive for you just to get clean wheels

What or how would rims look if a aluminum wheel was spray painted silver?

On chrome, to get any kind of paint to stick you would have to have the wheels blasted down to the bare aluminum and then painted. Your SE already has silver wheels, doesn't it?

I've used this http://www.flitz.com/ on alot of metal.
It works very good and only takes a small amount.
It also works for cleaning up clear plastics.
