Bigger (Than Stock) Oil Filter

Post by nunesjeff »

I remember reading some place that there's a big oil filter that we can use other than the called for small thing... I am currently using the fram (PH 3387a) that's called for but after changing the blood today I thought of it but I can't seem to find it again... So looking for a bigger filter like 1/2 qt or so in size... Thanks!!!

IIRC there's an issue on the Series I with ground clearance with the longer oil filter. Stock size in AC Delco is PF47, and the longer filter is the PF52, whose OE application is a 4.3L 4x4 S10 truck, with some possible others. I know on my 2k3 the longer filter doesn't make a difference as far as ground clearance, but it is a completely different car. Someone with a Series I who has run it will be able to tell you if it is a good idea or not.

I always ran the longer filter on my old '93 SSEi. It did stick down a little bit more, but unless you actually bottom the car out it should never be an issue. I ran with the longer filter for about two years, I used a Mobil 1 M1-201 filter.

Jeff, friends don't let friends Fram. It's the worst rated filter on the market.

If you want to see the ground clearance issue, come by and look under the Zilla. It's running either a PF52 or a longer K&N, I forget which. Yes, there is some risk. It COULD be the first thing you hit if you drive over something.

Bob, Series II angles the filter a little differently. There is almost no difference in ground clearance between the two.

I've been installing L26 and L32's in place of L36 and SII L67's all summer and the filter of choice for almost every install (over a dozen installed, almost 2 dozen sold) is a NAPA Gold 1036 filter. It's a little tight for W-bodies, stick down further on the 95-99 L36/L67 H-bodies, but it's a good upgrade and insurance against issues on engines that are warrantied for 90-120 days.
