F41 rack and pinion

Post by MattStrike »

My rack and pinion have been leaking progressively worse lately and am looking to replace it. I have the F41 suspension, but AZ shows only FE2 and FE1, and Advance only shows 2-port and 3-port as the options.

So the question:
I would assume the F41 uses the same rack and pinion as the FE2, but no clue which one is 2-port or 3-port, or if it even matters?

3 port:

2 port:

Take a look at yours and see if it has the line going to the center of the rack. I also saw on AZ that one has a 3 turn and the other has a 3.2 turn. See if your wheel does a little over 3 full turns lock to lock. Other than that, you would need the one for FE2.

Its going to depend on weather or not the rack has a power steering pressure switch.... Thats what the 3rd port is for..

almost forgot, FE2-F41 is one in the same..

Glad you asked this Matt.

Now for further, is there any harm or problem putting an FE2(F41) rack into an FE1 car? And whats the purpose of the pressure switch?

Nice Lesabre BTW

No harm at all.. The FE2/F41 rack is tighter or shall I say fewer turns lock to lock than the FE1 rack.. I believe the FE2/F41 is 2.7 turns lock to lock and the FE1 is 3.1 turns lock to lock.. All of the 88-91 3800 Vin C H bodies( through 91 ) used the pressure switch on the rack.. This would tell the ECM that the Power steering is under load and bring up the RPM's a tad....

The rack doesn't have any suspension-related names.

It's either the standard ratio rack, or the sport-tuned rack. Not related to the type of suspension. For instance, both of my cars are FE2. Only one has the sport-tuned rack.
