Greetings!

Post by GXPete »

Greetings fellow Bonnie worshippers!

I just found this site and I'm thrilled to have a such a great resource specific to the Bonneville. I just purchased (for a song) a 2005 GXP from the used car market. It was my 50th birthday present to myself!

I actually learned to drive in a new '75 Bonneville; I knew then it was a pretty sweet ride. But it wasn't until '97 that I leased my first new Bonneville, a Blue/Green SSE that I loved. My second Bonneville was a black '02 SSEi that I loved even more than the '97. And now, the '05 GXP, in Crimson Red Tintcoat, which I just drove home for the first time tonight. It was nice to get back into a roomy ride. I had two Grand Prix's in between the '02 and this one. The first Grand Prix was a regular GT2 but the one I'm about to turn in (coming off lease) is a GXP. Way too much motor in that car, but it sure moved quick. :)

Anyway, looking forward to tapping into your brains for anything that comes up. Since the new one is a used one, I did put some initial 'get it right' money into it, but it's good to go now and hopefully will give me years of enjoyment.

Pleasure to meet you all!

GXPete

As soon as I figure out how this forum does picture loading. Most others I've been to have an upload option when creating a post. This one appears to just use html img tagging so I need a bucket to pull from. Is that how it's done here?

Thanks.

Yes, you'll need to host the pictures elsewhere, or host them in the gallery here. But here's a great tutorial if you want.

Here are a few pics taken by the dealer:

Before you say it, I know, I know, the rainguards have gotta go! Any tips on getting those off, appreciated. I pulled the passenger side, front one off in about 6 pieces (the passenger side rear one was missing), leaving the two sided tape. Still need to do the driver's side. Can I use something like Goof Off™ on the two sided tape/glue or will that damage the door frame finish?

Thanks.

Goo Gone should work. Some 20 lb test weight fishing line should cut through the double-sided tape. I honestly don't think they're that bad, I was considering getting them on my car, but I don't smoke and don't drive with the windows cracked, so they'd be worthless for me, lol.

Looks Good!! How many miles are on it? Important thing to remember if you work on it yourself is that it takes 8 quarts of oil, and GM recommends synthetic. Just FYI.

Great tip about the fishing line - I'll definitely try that! I've never liked rainguards. I don't smoke and am not the type that needs to crack the windows either. I also am not one to have add-on stuff on my car. I like the factory look.

I need to pick up a front license plate cover for it. Even though my state requires both plates, I used to run the cover on my '02 Bonnie and the local LEOs never bothered me about it. I'd have to take it off for MVIs though. GMPartsDirect alternate catalog has it listed at $56. I must be able to get one cheaper than that, right?

It's got 65k on it. That's about what I would have on a 5 year old car so I thought that was pretty low. The engine compartment and interior looks as good as the outside of the car. Seriously, when I opened the hood, I thought the car was brand new. That's not to say it was showroom condition. I put some $$ into it to 'get it on the road'. It needed tie rods, all four rotors and front pads, the two fog light bulbs, one taillight bulb, and the driver's door weatherstrip. Going forward I'll do a lot of this type of stuff myself (except major stuff like brakes, etc.) but I let the stealer do it as I just wanted to get it on the road and inspected properly. I actually like this dealer, but their shop prices are like any, way high.

Anyway, there are a few other things I'm gonna need but I should probably post that stuff in a different thread.
