Post subject:  Freeze plug leaking

So I finally found the coolant leak on my '89

Freeze plug behind the starter motor (on the block) is leaking, looks like corrosion caused it.

I've never replaced a freeze plug before, but I figure it can't be that hard. Drill a hole in it, slide hammer it out, install new plug.

The last time I had a shop replace the plugs in a block, they used some sort of brown (I think) sealant on them. I'm not sure what it was, but I also have to consider that this will be an 'on car' service to fix it, and it has to be done as cheap as possible. So unless you all know where I can get a free block heater...

Can a freeze plug be installed without any special tools? (A task I'm currently using the magic of google to research as well)

Assuming it's a slow leak, have you tired the GM coolant sealing pellets? It might be worth a shot depending how much you really feel like messing with with the plug.

i had a small leak from heater plug - put some stop leak(high quality) and it works great on tiny leaks - if its rotted, it may work but only temp.

I was gonna say the cooling system pellets too.

Otherwise, the one way I do it without a freeze plug removing tool (which kinda does what you were thinking), is to take a screwdriver, Tap the screwdriver on one side of the freeze plug and it should rotate/flip the other end out in the bore. From there, just grab it with a pair of pliers and work it out.

While I would love to try something like the cooling system stop leak, it's actually more expensive than a new freeze plug. So I'll give it a go this weekend.

Here is a video of what I was trying to explain above.
