Post subject:  High Beams Won't Stay On

My 97 Bonneville SE has Daytime Running Lamps.

The High Beams will not stay on when I pull the turn signal lever towards me and I hear it click.

They will only stay on if I hold the turn signal lever towards me, and don't let it go. As soon as I release it, the low beams are back on.

My Haynes book shows a LAMP CONTROL MODULE controlling a HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH with one output for low beams and the other for high beams.

Is it a faulty HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH? If so, where is it located?

The switch is on the column, under the dash. The first thing to try is to tilt the column all the way down and see if it works - that usually indicates an issue with the rod that actuates the switch is bent or the plastic plunger inside the coulumn is breaking/broken.

The switch only has three wires on it, will be a little tight to get to so you might have to let the column drop down a bit. Before you remove the switch, tape the rod in place. It can fall out of the column plunger and is difficult to get seated again.

Pulling the stalk toward you only flashes the brights. To activate them push the stalk toward the dash. That's how it works on the 2000+ anyway.

My 97 Manual says I should pull it towards me, until it clicks, to turn on the high beams. It also says they will turn on if I pull it towards me and hold it before it clicks.

Pushing it doesn't do anything, and isn't supposed to for my 97 model, and probably not for 96, 98 and 99 model years either.

So, thanks MattStrike for answering my question about where to find the switch, and suggestion about how to remove it.

Oh, and yes, it still doesn't work if I tilt my steering wheel all the way down, so the rod must be bent or the plastic plunger must be broken.

So, I'll remove it when the weather gets warmer and report on it.
