Hey all,
My co-worker has a 94 Park Ave that he just picked up. Its got 80k miles on it, runs pretty good. We found a pump under the hood right behind the airbox (L27 car) that runs for about five minutes after the car is shut off and the key removed. It looks as if its some sort of vacuum ...

Bid my 97' Olds 88 farewell last night, thanks everyone!
Hello everyone,
I wanted to thank you all for helping me get 3 and a half years out of my Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight. I have been on this site since late 2007 seeking information to keep my car running. What started out as a gift from my uncle for helping him out eventually turned into one of the most ...

Power Steering Leak!
Hey everybody,
I have a power steering fluid leak that seems to be coming from the steering wheel input shaft. Its leaking a decent amount and the pump is starting to whine. Can I just change out the seal or will the whole rack need to be changed? If I change the rack, I am pretty sure I will need ...

Re: Replaced front tranny mount
I just replaced mine on Saturday too. It looked just as bad as yours. The car has 137,000 miles on it. I fear that the rear one is bad now because I hear a weird squeaking noise thats consistent with the vibration when I start my car. The back one must be harder to replace then the front. Pep boys ...

Re: 1997 old 88 hessitation while driving.
Is the computer throwing any codes? I know you said you replaced the fuel pump, but I had the same symptoms on a car I previously owned (88' 6000) where the car would sputter on anything but full throttle. I sold the car like that and then ran into the guy a month later and he said the fuel pump ...

Re: Computer keeps throwing P0420 code, need advice
I modded harness on the 02 sensor I had laying around and replaced the downstream sensor. So far no more SES light. I hit the cat with a few wrenches and it didnt rattle, so it appears to still be good. I was told by a mechanic a few years ago that my cat was inevitably toast because it was throwing ...

Computer keeps throwing P0420 code, need advice
Hey all,
I am having a problem with my car and I need to fix it so I can pass Pennsylvania emissions inspection. The computer keeps throwing the P0420 code (catalyst below threshold efficiency), which basically means the computer thinks the catalytic converter is bad. I read on here that most of ...

Re: Just put new drums on back, do I need to replace shoes t
Thanks for the replies, guys. I figured I'd let some of you comment before coming back. I've been driving my Camaro around lately till I figure this out while the weather is still decent. To answer some of your questions, I tighten the lugs in a star pattern, and tighten them with my four way as ...

Re: Transmission shudders at 50mph
Try that and see how it works. These transmissions also lock the converter in 3rd (drive) so you may notice it after some time when driving in 3rd. I know that my car progressively got worse over time, hopefully yours won't do the same. My car used to struggle at 60 mph and "plane out" around 72 ...

Just put new drums on back, do I need to replace shoes too?
Hey guys,
I replaced my old, original 135,000 mile rear drums with new units from advance auto. While doing this, I noticed that my rear shoes still have plenty of meat on them, so I left them on. Now I have a nasty shudder that seems to permeate through all four wheels when I apply my brakes. Is ...

Re: Transmission shudders at 50mph
I had the same problem with my car (97' H-body). Staring about six months ago I noticed a shudder when the torque converter clutch locked up in drive and in overdrive. I tried everything to keep it from shuddering. I added lucas transmission additive which didnt do much of anything. So later on I ...

Need help figuring out if front caliper mounts are bad
Hey guys,
I am having a problem with my brakes. There is a vibration that comes from the front of the car when I stop from anything over 20 mph. I am thinking that its something to do with the calipers that I just installed from Pep Boys (reman junk). This is the second brake rebuild on this car in ...

Re: A/C leak located!
I just redid my A/C so I can remember clearly that the o-rings at the compressor were metallic with rubber around them. I actually liked working with those far more than the traditional o-rings that seal up the rest of the system. I too had a leak that needed attention but it was on one of the lines ...

Re: TCC Valve is worn, can I disconnect the trans wiring harness
Thank you all once again for your advice. I am having trouble disconnecting the C and D pins from the transmission harness. I have sat in the driveway for a half an hour with a paperclip and small screwdrivers but I cannot seem to figure it out unless I want to cut the wire. Any advice?

Re: TCC Valve is worn, can I disconnect the trans wiring harness
Enslow, I take it you had a similar problem with your converter. How long have you had yours disconnected for? I am willing to sacrifice fuel economy for a trans that will last longer.

Re: TCC Valve is worn, can I disconnect the trans wiring harness
Thanks for all the advice. I figured I would ask you guys before disconnecting that as I knew that 8 pin connections meant other things were going on too. When I said I did everything to try and solve it, I meant that I switched MAFs, I changed the fluid, I even added a bottle of friction modifier ...

TCC Valve is worn, can I disconnect the trans wiring harness
Hey all,
As the title says, I have tried everything short of a rebuild to get the torque converter to stop bucking when in lockup. My car feels more like a galloping horse than a car when I'm on the highway and in lockup mode. I know that you can disable the lockup feature by disconnecting the ...

Re: Trans sometimes drops to 3rd gear and won't upshift
Are you sure that its downshifting rather than the torque converter unlocking? My car has a problem with the torque converter where it shudders and bucks when its locked up and eventually it will unlock for the remainder of a road trip. It is caused by a worn TCC valve (torque converter clutch valve ...

Need some advice on parts for A/C system
Hey all,
Last winter I broke my A/C condenser when driving through snow. The snow pressed against it and cracked it. I have been very busy and have not had the chance to replace it until now. Clearly the system has been open a while (3.5 months), and I have spoken to a few mechanics who say I will ...

Hey guys,
