Checked the gas cap no dice seems fine. It has happened to me before but after a while the gas cap message has gone away this is the first time for service engine soon light has come on. Any ideas?

do you always use premium gas? (being a ssei you should be) I know my se the one time I put regular gas in my engine soon light turned on. Got it cleared, started using premium and it never turned on again.

I just replaced my gas cap a few weeks ago. Kept doing the same thing, only the last time it wouldn't click and just kept popping off. I was coming up to my emisions test (Happy Bday from the Ontario Gov) so i decided to put a new one on and haven't had the P440 code come up again. I wanted a gas cap with the strap on it and could only get it from the dealer $25... :sad:

I have the same problem with code PO442. It was tested at autozone. I havent figured out the problem but my filler tube does have some rust on it and cant seem to come off. The cap was cleaned and now has hardly any rust on it, can see it unless looking close. I dont know how to fix it but my check engine light has been on ever since i bought it.

this seems like this is a pretty common problem with the 00-05 bonnevilles. i've experienced the same problem with my '04 se. finally i broke down and bought a new gas cap about a month ago or so and haven't had any problems since.

iirc....P0442 is also associated with a small evap leak, so maybe check into that.

its a rather general code, you sort of have to work with the cheapest replacements, up.

On the 2000+s the evap vent valve, near the rear tire, is a more common failure than the purge solenoid.

O.k i'll do that.

My gas cap had very little rust on it but cleaned it and the filler tube has some rust on it. Im guessing that if it comes one then i have to fix it because it will just keep coming on and maybe get worse.
