So I finally decided to fix my AC on my 91 regal, I went to oreileys and bought a can of 134a an put it in, "I thought this is easy". Went to feel if the AC was cold, nope. Bought another bottle with a gauge on it an put in on an the needle instantly jumped in the warning zone. I looked at the AC clutch and it was spinning, the air coming out of the vents is warm but not cold. I'm wondering if it's safe to release all the refrigerated gas out of the AC line an try refilling it or?? Any advice would be appreciated!

hi, it is neither safe nor environmentally friendly to release the cool juice to the air - it should be evacuated to a canister by a tech with proper equipment.

it seems you have more issues than just low cool juice so a tech should look at it.

If there is no compression (like an expansion valve or compressor failure, or the compressor not running), depending on the temperature, it can cause the low side gauge to peg max.

If you have confirmed the compressor is engaged continuously (it likes to quit trying if a low charge is detected), the engine cooling fans are running, and the pressure does not come down to the proper range, then I recommend having a professional look at it.

Do not remove any refrigerant, do not add any more refrigerant, do not run the air conditioner (unplug the compressor if it's going to be a while).

If the system is not ran or further tampered with, the chances of any further damage occurring are relatively low until A/C tech eyes can be laid on it, especially if it is overcharged.

Was the system already converted to R134a previously?

I am assuming so, because otherwise it wouldn't have compatible fittings, and we would be seeing a whole different kind of question.
