I got mine from Intense yesterday and it looks good, but the directions are for a Grand Prix. Like you, I have a Bonneville....

Are there any installation differences I should know about before I begin, or just follow the directions to the letter?

The link above is how I did it, but I also removed my headlight.

I will use the "remove headlight" route instead of removing the tire. Sounds a lot easier.

I removed my tire. My only regret is that I wish I could have gotten the filter to sit more horizontal than vertical, but I'm not even sure if this is possible.

You want it vertical, that way any water splashed onto it is able to easily fall off, instead of sitting in the pleats of the filter.

This all reminds me, my K&N is probably disgusting...

Same here Ed, as I don't think I've cleaned it since I got it, 4 years and 48,000 miles ago. . .

I never thought about it that way. I was thinking you wouldn't want it sticking down into water if that were to happen.

I would like to get mine so that it isn't pushing down into the lower plastic valance so much though. Probably try to get more of a 60* angle.

Mine was a tight fit and the filter actually got squeezed a little bit. I think before I put my bumper cover back on I might buy a slightly smaller filter.

Is that a possibility? Has anyone ever tried/used a different filter than what was supplied in the kit?

I'm thinking about using the filter that's in my LeSabre, because it's an X-Stream filter (has some filtration on the end cap), but I think that's an even bigger filter.

Using K&N RU-3130 3.5" inlet and smaller in size.. no problems. you can try using a Pre-filter over the K&N to help keep it clean..
like so:

I had to jam the cone under there and it's kinda crumpled against the bumper, but it does the job. I've gotten into much too deep water many times with it, nothing really happened. I don't know if the engine produces enough suction to suck up water at lower RPM levels. (1500 or less.) That's just my hypothesis.

redzmonte:

I like your pic/ idea of the smaller filter. We use to run those pre-filters in go-kart racing on dirt tracks and they really did help catch a ton of dirt and crud. Another item we used was a pre-filter made of foam like you'd see on a Briggs & Stratton mower engine. It has this green foam pre-filter that goes over the actual air filter. Coat that foam pre-filter and it catches an immense amount of foreign matter. Sure easy to clean because you just peel it off, wash in warm soapy water, oil again, and stretch back over your Cone filter like a sock over a foot. You never have to take the Cone filter out....I see the same process for your pre-filter wrap in the picture.
