I pull a lightweight trailer with my '01 SSEi. It's a 4'X6' trailer I got from Lowes. Anyway, the trailer light plug cam unplugged and was dragging in the street and wore through the insulation on the wires. This was the car end of the plug. I noticed today that my trailer lights weren't working and that's when I noticed the bare wires. I spliced and taped up the bad spot in the wires and checked and some things were working while other things weren't.
I went to WalMart and got another wiring kit and converter thinking maybe the skinned wires that were all frayed and touching each other somehow shorted out the converter box. With everything hooked up correctly, I now have working blinkers both left and right but on the right side, the brake lights aren't working and on the left side, the running lights aren't working. This is the case whether the trailer is hooked up or not. I checked every fuse associated withe the tail lights and it made no difference. I've even swapped the bulbs from the right side to the left side, still no difference. It's late and dark and I've got a loaded trailer to deal with in the morning. Materials needed for a jobsite. I'm not getting voltage to my left tail lights.
What's going on here?
My sockets are a little crusty looking, but I cleaned up the contacts and they look clean enough to work, but there's no power going to the left tail light bulbs.
I'm working alone, so I can't check voltage to the right brake light, but using a mirror behind the car in the garage, it's obviously not working.
Again, not left tail lights and no right brake lights.
Please help.
Thanks,

I cleaned up the sockets for the brake lights on the right side and got them working. I ran a jumper wire from the right tail light to the left tail light, so I have tail lights now. I really need a wiring diagram for the tail lights to make sure I've got everything wired correctly. On my trailer, the tail lights are very bright and it doesn't really get brighter when I mash the brake pedal. Everything was working perfectly before I skinned up the wired by dragging the trailer light wires down the street.
Thanks,

hi, I would get a mutimeter and check for continuity from plug to plug - you may have bad connection or maybe a single strand of wire is contacting wrong wire causing issues

My guess would be where the trailer plug has tapped into the brake light and tail light are the cause of your trouble..the circuit is broken there. If the trailer lights are working, then the wiring going to each corresponding light that isn't functioning has a broken connection at the splice. I'd double check there first. Use a multimeter to check for voltage as the splice, and then at the bulb end. If you are getting lighting at the splice but not the bulb, then there is a problem after the splice.

btw, the trailer wiring harness likely only tapped into one wire each, which is why you have a brake light on one side but not the other as well as driving lights...the trailer only needs one signal, and used only one wire from each light to make the connection in the harness.

It's all good guys. As I said, I cleaned up the plugs for the right side and got the brake lights working. Tail lights constantly have moisture in them and I guess that's what caused the corrosion in the right tail light. It's working fine. I have no idea what the problem is with the left side light is. There's no power at the harness for the running lights. Brake and blinker work correctly, but I had to run a jumper from the right running light to the left side to get the left light working correctly. No bad splice involved. There's no power at the harness for the left running light. There's a problem with the car. I got it working, but I don't like the steps I had to take to get it to work.
Again, a wiring diagram for the tail lights would be a big help. There must be a pinched wire somewhere, but I don't know how the rest of the harness is fine, but no power for the left running light or parking light or whatever you want to call it.
