Project Bonneville Begins

Post by Boostershot »

A few weeks ago I came across a screaming deal on a 2000 SSEi
The car came to me in with an interior/exterior virtually unblemished, the engine with 115k miles on it, and the transmission slipping.

Having looked at the engine, I realized the all to common problem, The LIM Gasket was leaking. I tackled that first, I rang a friend from work to help. How hard could it be? So we began by removing the fuel rail...

#2 Injector opening.

So, what to do? Well at the very least, I needed a new LIM Gasket. So off came the M90 in preparation for the Gasket replacement. What do I find?!
Well it was a bit messy.

Now it was time to take off the LIM, and what a treat that was. It appears that the Gasket had been leaking for sometime, this is what I found.

Image
Mmmm, Dexcool is Wonderful.

It was at this point that I realized the severity of the leak. This motor was likely going to need a complete refresh in order to be in top shape again. So I came home a little down, but not defeated. I started doing some research on a rebuild. I stumbled across a few web sites, and, saw some things that caught my eye. On one of the many "post your own video" websites I came across a Turbo'd Grand Prix. After watching that video, I knew that the Bonneville I had acquired was destined for better places. I had to Turbo it, I was now on a Mission.

I rang my friend from work and told him of my Idea. He was almost as excited as I was when I decided that was what I was going to do. This engine needed to come out now. Around 8:30 on a Saturday night we got started with the removal, less than 5 hours later, engine/tranny were out.

What Engine?

Now to get the Engine disassembled.... more to come!

is your SSEi white?

Not many turbo Bonnevilles here, but there is a 2k+ dual charged... super and turbo.

Good luck!

It's Galaxy Silver.
I used to sell cars at a GM Store many moons ago, and it turns out I actually sold this car! The couple that bought it traded in a 95 Eagle Talon TSI on it hehe.
I loved these cars so much when I sold vehicles I had to have one. While the S'charger is cool, the sound of a spooled turbo is second to none.

The Rad had some sludge in it, I'm tossing around the idea of a smaller width multi-core rad to make room for an intercooler.

Actually a couple people have put the intercooler core between the radiator and ac condenser.

Air to air, front-mounted heat exchanger. What Pat was trying to say is that such a thing would be too big to fit between said radiators.

I do plan on going with an Front Mount Intercooler aka Air to Air, but at this point I'm not just sure where it's going to be located. The Rad and Condenser are to close together, maybe only an inch apart, and most intercoolers are several inches thicker than that. My Dilemma though, is to keep the A/c or toss it. I'd rather like to keep the A/c. :)

Keep the AC! If you're going to put this much work to have an awesome turbo Bonneville, no reason you can't cruise in comfort.
