CD Player doesn't read CD's

Hi all, I have a combo CD player and cassette radio in my 2004, and the CD player has a hard time reading CD's. If I put one in, the motor inside will make a loud skipping noise like it's trying to fight a plastic gear, then it will eject the CD. But it doesn't eject the CD all the way, the CD sticks out just enough to grab the edge of it, maybe 1/2". If I keep trying sometimes the CD player will eventually work.

I don't want to replace the radio with an aftermarket one, I'd like to keep it original. Has anyone had this happen before? What was the fix?

The CD unit is faulty and is buried deep within the head unit itself. Best option is to replace it with a different OEM one, but it will need to be reprogrammed with a Tech2 at the dealer or similar high end scantool.
