Oil pressure warning light on. Fixed!

Post by rustyroger »

:) High y'all,
It's been a long time since I made a post, life got in the way somewhat.
However the Buick has seen some use in the meantime, trouble free until last month when the flrxible manifold to catalytic converter exhaust broke. But a friend of mine is a skilled welder and he fixed it better than new. :)
But today I was checking it over before taking it to a meet tomorrow and the oil light stayed on, and 0 oil pressure showed up on the display. I got underneath and disconnected the switch by the oil filter, but the light stays on and still reads zero on the display. As a quick and (very  ) dirty check I took the switch off and ran the engine for a few seconds, plenty of oil shot out leading me to think it's an electrical issue rathe mechanical lack of pressure.
The switch has 3 pins, I checked with a multimeter and found around 2kohms between one pin and both the others (separately), and a short between the others.
Any ideas anybody?

Roger.

Just replace the switch Roger. They go bad and that's why the pressure gauge either hits the high stop or reads nothing at all (or the light stays on). To see if you have oil flowing you might be able to remove the oil filler cap while it's running and see if oil is streaming off the rocker right below it.

As said above, it is just a switch and a common issue. I've had at least 4 of these fail. They can peg the needle, or they can sporadically make it drop to zero.

Just replace it with a parts store one or if you can manage to wait, with something off the internet. Would avoid the super cheap ones personally.

New switch from Rock Auto (genuine GM), plus a new front transmission mount. Now the oil light goes out on startup and shows 65psi cold, which goes down to 40psi idling hot according to the information display.
Thanks for your advice guys, always check the obvious first.
