Looking into buying 18s

Post by ereigaM »

As the title states, I'm looking into getting a set of police steelies for my bonneville. I was wondering what, if anything, I need to consider/change before making the purchase. I don't know anything about offsets, etc. Even working at a tire shop I haven't learned anything related to that. Will my fenders have enough clearance with stock? When I first purchased my 92 years ago, the person had 18s in the back with no adjustment, so I'm not too concerned about that but the front seems questionable. Thank you for your time.

My big concern is bolt pattern. I dont know of any steel 18's that would fit our cars.

Yeah, I don't know what car you'd be getting 18" steelies off of, which is the most important thing. The 2010+ Caprice uses 5x120 bolt pattern with 14mm lugs, the Bonneville uses 5x115 with 12mm lugs, which are way different. I don't know the hub diameters of either, but I'd assume they're not the same. Ford Crown Victorias use the 5x114.3, which technically fits, but I'm not familiar with any Ford coming with 18" steel wheels. 17" wheels yes, but I've heard they contact brake calipers due to their shape. Maybe that was just on GXP brake setups.

The clearance you need to worry about on the wheels themselves is the bolt pattern, hub diameter and backspacing (whether it will clear your brakes or not), and the width, making sure it will clear suspension components, etc as it cycles and turns. Then you need to figure out what tire you'll be running on that wheel to also clear said obstacles, plus dealing with fenders and wheel wells, and anything else you may hit while operating the vehicle.

If I'm not mistaken these are identical to the ones I'm trying to get.

But if clicking links isn't your fancy, a copypasta:

Size: 18x8
Lugs: 5
Bolt Pattern: 4.5 Inch

I first saw them on a 2014 P.I. Taurus that came into the shop.

I hope that $269.95 is for a set of 4?! That's ridiculous....

They might fit, but you'd have to check caliper clearance, backspacing, etc. Best thing to do would be to test-fit one, I guess...
