2002 ssei passkey security issue

I got a 2002 ssei that is flashing the security light. No crank, no fuel pump prime. Battery is fine. Car has 81k miles. It only came with one key

Any ideas? I looked up a bypass procedure but couldn't find a concrete method. Also he key has a radio signal not a resistance, I could be wrong, but I couldn't get a reading with a voltmeter. It kept declining to zero on all attempts.

Help a brother out?!

Can a custom tune disabling the systems get me on the road?

Yes, you can custom tune out passlock, VATS, EGR, rear O2 sensors...blah blah blah.

However, we might be able to get you going. There are a couple of procedures you can try. Hopefully you have the master key. That will make things easier.

I'm going to type up the procedures out of the book in the next post.

30 minute Re-learn procedure
use this procedure after replacing any of the following components:
The Keys/Lock cylinder
theft deterrent controller module
PCM
1. Turn ON the ignition, Engine OFF Using a Master Pass Key lll ( black )
2.Observe the security telltale. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn off.
3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
4. Repeat set 1 through 3 two more times, for a total of 3 cycles of 30 minutes.

Quick learn procedure -Keys Only
important
  • addition master theft deterrent controller keys ( black ) or Valet keys (gray ) may be added ( up to 10 keys ) using this procedure when there is an available learned Master theft deterrent controller key ( black )
this procedure adds keys only
The keys learned must duplicate the mechanical cut of the current key
If more than one valet key ( gray ) is to be learned, each valet key must be immediately preceded by a learned master key
1. with previously learned master , turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF
2. Turn OFF the ignition and remove key
3. within 10 seconds, insert the key to be learned and turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. the vehicle has now learned the new key.

I'm going to see if there is more information in the FSM that may help.

I couldn't find anything that doesn't require a Tech 2 or similar to learn the key. If you planned on having a tuner work on the PCM, then you should be able to use whatever key you want without worry. Good luck!

Appreciate your responses.

Now I'm wondering if it even is a pass key issue or a bad starter or ignition switch. How can I tell if those are the problem?

When I did the procedure, the security light goes out within seconds of the needles orientation themselves. Not ten mins like the procedure describes. In fact the only time the security light is on is for 30 seconds after arming (normal) and after unlocking the door it will flash (also normal). Also, idk if this is indicative or not, the radio theft lock flashes when armed, unarmed, but not when the ignition is on or trying to start.

There is no turn over at all with the motor, but I can hear the fuel pump prime. The battery is at 11.6-11.9 at the gauge, which is enough to start the motor normally correct?

Or....does the vats/ lock theftlock / sec system act that way when good and bad? What do you think?

Pretty sure pass-key or passlock both disable the fuel injectors, car should still crank if I recall correctly. I worked at a couple local shops from 1995-2001 installing remote starts and have done MANY GM cars.

Yeah, if it's not cranking over, then you will want to look at the starter, at least voltages at the starter and solenoid. Passkey disables the fuel injection, not the ability to turn the engine over.

It could be an ignition cylinder issue as well. I'd want to verify that you have 12V and ground at the starter lugs, and then see if you are getting voltage to the solenoid when the key is put into start...

The PassKey3 system in the 2000+s also disables the starter if a proper key is not detected. However, as your security light goes out when you turn the key to on, that indicates that it sees a proper key. Either try running power directly to the starter, or remove the starter, and have it tested. If the starter tests good, then the ignition switch would be a likely suspect.
