question about keyless entry module/remotes

Post by desertpierat »

The k/e module & remote combo for my 2000 ssei is the same as all of the ones below. Am I to assume that if i can find a combination of module & remote from any of these vehicles, I can plug the module in and use the remotes that were already programmed to it?

Buick Lesabre 2000 6 Cyl 3.8L, 8 Cyl 4.6L
Cadillac Deville 2000 6 Cyl 3.8L, 8 Cyl 4.0L, 8 Cyl 4.6L

One more question... What about the 2000 makes it impossible to program manually? Is it the keyless module itself or the cars computer?

Just the way it was designed. Must be done with a tech2 or one of the new Dorman programmers.

Has anyone ever tried plugging the module into a 2001-2005 to program it then put it back in a 2000?

At Rockauto, you can purchase a Dorman #13745, which includes a key fob and a programer that plugs into your ODBII port and you can program. I think it's about $50 bucks with our discount. It's pretty cool and takes all the fuss out of the process. You can program other transmitters too. If you have some old ones laying around or if you purchase the right ones from e-bay or wherever, you can program them to work for your car too. You can't search under your car parts and find it on Rockauto - it won't show up, but you can type in the Dorman part number and the manufacturer as Dorman. Here it is: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... 75&jsn=238

Somewhere between 2000 and 2005, they switched the module from KOBUT1BT to KOBLEAR1XT. They are not interchangeable. If you have a KOBUT1BT module, you must use a KOBUT1BT keyfob.

I had a thought last night, might have been tried already, but could you take the module from a Bonneville and plug it in to another Pontiac that is self-programmable, like a 2002 GP, program it with the Bonneville fobs, then return the module to the Bonneville?

That is true for 2001-2005 but not for 2000.
While all 20000-2005 key fobs must be programmed, Dorman doesn't make a key fob/programmer combo for the 2000 Bonnevilles.
Dorman does make those for 2001-2005 Bonnevilles.

Certainly an interesting idea but I suspect it isn't possible.

My 98 SE also uses a KOBUT1BT module and does not require a Tech 2 for programming (same module is used in the SE, SLE & SSEI).

My 2000 SSEI uses a KOBUT1BT module and requires a Tech 2 for programming.

Unfortunately, the 2000 and 1998 actually use different modules to receive the signal from the key fobs .

A look the module listing on GMPartsDirect shows that the 2000 Bonneville module was used in a very limited number of vehicles, mostly in 1999 and 2000.
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/pontiac/bo ... e=receiver

Dorman makes a key fob and fob programmer replacement for Bonnevilles from 2001-2005 but does not make one for the 2000s.

My guess is that it wasn't worthwhile to do it for such a limited number of vehicles/limited market.
Even if the plug configuration isn't different for the 1999-down & the 2000 modules, who knows whether the computer would recognize the other module.
