Drivers Side Mirror

Hey guys,
My drivers side mirror has a strange issue. When putting the car in reverse, the mirror tilts down as it should, however once finished backing up and moving forward in drive, the mirror will not return to its original position. Do this a few times, and the mirror is way down, and I have to bring it back up manually with the switch. The passenger side mirror operates just fine, returning to its original position as it should.
Any ideas?
Thanks

My first guess is that the sensor has become disengaged either by popping off the back of the mirror glass mount or breaking off... I've seen both occur. Read through this thread and you will see how the sensors attach to the back of the plastic mirror mount (vertical adjuster attachment point). I also document how you need to attach the glass to engage both the sensors. I suspect that either the ball has popped out of that socket, or the ball has broken off and the head is still in the mount for the glass. I know that the thread is for a Cadillac, but the way the glass and sensors attach is identical to the Bonneville. This is the same procedure I used when I took my Bonneville mirrors apart to add the turn signal indicators.

If the glass is properly attached, then either the sensor inside the adjuster mechanism is faulty or the door module is defective.

I had the same issue with my passenger side mirror. There was a huge
gash on the backside of it, telling me that someone hit it or the driver, (wifey),
whacked it against something. I ended up buying an entire mirror assembly
as one the plastic clips holding one of the adjusters to the mirror had broken inside.
If you need to replace it, don't purchase an aftermarket cheapo on ebay.
Get a actual GM one at a junkyard or somewhere. There should be plenty around.

Can't you turn that function off thru the operator options panel?
I know I could on the Escalade, but I don't remember it on the GXP.

Yes, it's done through the Driver Information Center. Only problem is, if you like the feature, turning it off doesn't solve the problem.

Um, was this feature an option or standard?
I don't recall mine ever tilting....

It is a standard option, that is turned on/off in the DIC as previously mentioned. If yours isn't doing it, it's probably turned off.
Here is how to get into the programming mode;
1. Turn the ignition to RUN.
2. Place the vehicle in PARK.
3. Press the MODE button on the DIC to scroll through the options until PERSONALIZATION PROGRAMMING appears on the display.
4. Press the SELECT button.
5. The DIC displays PRESS SELECT TO SELECT OPTIONS then PRESS RESET TO CHANGE OPTIONS.
6. The DIC then displays DRIVER NUMBER: 1 2. An arrow is shown next to the current driver.
7. Press the RESET button in order to change the driver # for this session of personalization.
8. Press the SELECT button in order to advance to the next option.
When scrolling through the options in #8, you then need to look for is "Paralell Park Assist" (I wish GM would name it consistently. In some vehicles it's this, in others "curbview", in others "mirror assist", etc);
1. The DIC displays TILT MIRRORS: OFF/ON.
2. Press the RESET button in order to place the arrow before the desired choice.
3. Press the SELECT button in order to advance to the next option.

This was only available on the SSEi and GXP so you should be good to go. No memory seat = no "Outside Curb View Assist Mirror". Otherwise, follow the instructions posted

Thanks guys, you've taught me so much about my car since I got it.
My apologies to the OP for the temporary thread hijack.

So today I took the glass off to have a look. Everything appears to be normal with nothing broken or out of place. I put it back together and I still have the same problem. The strange thing is if I push the driver 1 button on the door, the mirror goes back up to where it is suppose to be, but will not return to the correct position when you come out of reverse. I'm stumped.
Now I did notice something else... When I turn the function off in the DIC, the mirrors still drop when going in reverse... Something must be wrong...

What # key pod where you using? Number 1 or 2 appears on the bag of the pod and that allows for 2 drivers to have independent settings. You might need to turn it off using both pods.
For what it is worth, the feature on my passenger side mirror rotates down and then doesn't completely return. Now I know how to turn it off...

I don't know what others have experienced, but the memory functions on both of the '05 GXP's I have owned have never worked consistently. When I bought my car, I set up all the memory seat functions, mirrors, etc. However, sometimes the driver's seat will go into 'exit' mode even though I have that feature turned off. Sometimes when I unlock the car with the key fob, I still have to press the "memory 1" button on the inside door handle to get my driver's seat settings back.
I chalk this up to incomplete or "buggy" software development by GM. I really don't let it bother me much, and it is a 10+ year old car with aging technology. I'm happy with the way the important features work, and put up with the little quirks.

Mine has always worked exactly as designed and expected. There is a module located under the drivers seat that manages the various memory functions. This may be defective. If you also have heated seats there will be two modules. The memory seat module is the larger of the two. The heated seat module will be identical to the only module mounted to the bottom of the passengers seat (each seat has a separate heater control module).

I could not get the drivers mirror to come back up, so I turned the function off on both drivers. At least now the mirror is always where it needs to be.
