oil leak

Post by SSEi95 »

So my ex has gone thru 6 qts of oil in about 3 days in her 2k2 SSEi. Her garage floor is caked with fresh(er) oil. All I could see while in her garage is that it seemed to be leaking towards the back of the engine but couldn't see real well there. So today I took her car and brought it to my place and jacked it up. At first it looked like the oil filter was loose. Got another easy 1/4 turn on it to tighten it up. Seemed like the issue since the oil seemed to be coming from the filter seam. Wiped it down, started it up, and oil all over again right away. Did some more digging and found it was actually coming form the Oil Pressure Sending Unit a few inches directly above it. Reached up and I was able to turn it by hand VERY easily. Somehow it had backed out almost 3 full turns since it was last replaced about 2 years ago. Snugged it back down and now no more oil leaking. :) Although while I had the car on the jacks I found the front right wheel bearing is on it's way out. Just ordered that and will install it in a week or so. It's kinda nice... I still get to work on the SSEi but I don't have to pay for any of the parts I use. :D

I hate oil sending units. The only thing they are good for is 1)making sure you have oil pressure and 2)causing you to loose oil pressure and an engine if you're not fast and alert when they fail. - BC

This got a lot more interesting....

So I fixed the oil leak but found the front right tire was loose. Thinking wheel bearing. Got the bearing and got the tire off (previously wouldn't come off). Double checked the bearing and it was actually fine. Turned out to be the tie rod end but I couldn't tell before because the tire was stuck on. So in the process of replacing the tire rod end I found the sway bar end links were broken off. So I replaced those too. Drove it to work the next day and the back end was bouncing all over the place. After some simple tests I found out the rear shocks were toast. Replaced those on Saturday. Started poking around to see what else on the car isn't right and round coolant sitting next to the LIM. Turns out the LIM gasket is leaking too. Drained the fluids last night and it looks like I caught it just in time. No chocolate milk for oil. So right now the top 1/3 the engine is sitting in the trunk waiting for new gaskets... I know it still needs a transmission flush/fill, filter and shift kit and possibly a wheel bearing too (based on ABS/traction lights always on). On the bright side, it's the Ex's car still at the moment so it hasn't costed me a dime to fix it and I enjoy working on it so...
