A few months ago during The Retrofit Source's blackfriday sale I decided to get another set of projectors to do my own retrofit (which I've yet to do). But along with the projectors I got I also added some LED Projector fog lights since with the way the savings worked out I basically paid full price for the projectors and got the fog lights free. I didn't know much about LED light output as far as driving lights are concerned but I know many vehicles are switching to it and thought what the hell, lets try them out. Finally got around to getting these in since the weather has warmed up. But first off here's what I got: Morimoto XB LED Fog Lights (Type-S)

One disappointment was the +$20 option for the yellow LaminX film. Which I assumed TRS was going to apply before shipping but instead they sent pre-cut film. Which was kind of difficult to line up properly since the lens is a dome shape but I got one on decent. The other kept creasing and eventually didn't want to stick anymore so I left it off. If you want to do that I'd suggest going to eBay since that same $20 there will get you about a couple square feet of film and you'll have multiple attempts or extra and can trim it to suit.

I had to pull the bumper cover off because the front heat exchanger prevented easy access to the fog lights, plus I replaced my air filter and intake tubing as well. Otherwise this wouldn't be required for anyone else.


Anyway first issue was the bracket needed some slight trimming. I used a file to trim the corners on each tab like so.

Kinda difficult to see but now it slides right in and it's fairly centered.



Next, since these are pretty small compared to stock as well as different bracketing, I wanted to make sure this would mount closer to flush with the front bumper cover rather than be recessed a few inches so I found some 1" nylon spacers at Home Depot in the hardware section and paired them up to space the fog light 2" out from the back of the opening in the bumper cover. Also grabbed some 2-1/2" long bolts, washers, nuts etc. So now they're mounted, and that was fairly simple & easy.

As for wiring, the plug that comes with these works with our stock 880 bulb socket, except that the little nub for the latch is on the opposite side so this potentially allows the connection to work itself loose. They fit pretty snug though but for now I wrapped the connection with electrical tape. Alternatively Advance/Autozone carry some typical electrical connectors so you could probably find a socket that would fit but I forgot to look for that all 3 times I went out for other stuff.

(Really not sure why my phone picked up blue in just the passenger side headlight, but the HID's are 5K white and the LED's match that pretty closely in person.)

Now I'm just left deciding on what to do about a sort of shroud to fill in the gap around the light and the fog light hole. I came across these at Home Depot, they're shrouds for recessed ceiling lighting. They're rated for outdoor use and stainless steel so I figured they'd work pretty well here but I wasn't sure what size to go with. They're only $4 each so I grabbed two of each.

There's this one which will require significant trimming on the inside to fit around the fog light lens but the outside diameter slips near perfectly into the fog light recess in the bumper. The only other issue thing would be how to mount it.


The other one I found is a bit larger. It won't take much trimming at all to allow it to slip over the fog light lens and the top edge would sit flush on the bumper cover. I figured this one I could just put some adhesive strip on the back and stick it to the bumper cover. I'd likely paint this one body color if used.

Lookin' great, Booze! The output likes quite decent. Personally, the shroud on the driver's side looks better to me, as it fits inside the fog light hole and looks more factory.

Either way, nice job!

My vote is for a recessed shroud. It's cleaner, as if the fog lamp and shroud are a standalone assembly, so looks more factory to me.

+1 for me too!

You should plasti-dip them white so they match better, and then you could get a better look at how they actually would be in your car. But other than that, the smaller one almost looks too small and doesn't fill the gap as good, whereas the bigger one almost looks like its apart of the bumper (minus the edge). Maybe you could put bondo around it or something to smooth them out and make them look like they are actually molded to the bumper.

I think the smaller one would look good if you sunk it back 1" from where it sits. Almost like a frenched light look.

I have the paint here since I have GXP wing & rockers to paint match still. But the problem with smoothing out the larger one with bondo like you mentioned is that I'd no longer have access to remove the fog light at that point. However it's done the shroud will have to be removable before or with the foglight.

I suppose your right. I don't know then, lol. Good luck on your decision.

I'm seriously considering installing a set in my '00 SSEi. I see that you noted using the Type-S lights. What's the difference between the Type-S and Type-T?

The lens is a different shape.

The Type-T has an angled lens like this:

Those lights look really good and have a good beam pattern for fogs. Would like to find something like that with a long range beam.
