04 SE....Convertor issues

Post by zamjohn »

My SE has about 92000 miles and convertor lockup is extremely slow in my opinion. Often after sitting for a while you have to drive 6-7 miles highway speed before convertor will lockup and then it seems to slowly slide down in to lockup instead of nice drop. This has been going on for last year and half(gradually getting worse) and I've been noticing a corresponding significant drop in fuel mileage as well which I suspect may be related? This may be unrelated but about 6 weeks ago got SES light which hung around for about 4 days and then disappeared on its own. 2 weeks ago it came back and now doesn't go away. I'm thinking this may be catalytic convertor issues as that at this same mileage was the case on a 01 SE that I previously had. No testing on any of this as the last 3 1/2 weeks mostly spent in hospital with sibling who is passing on. Any ideas on these issues? Will get code read as soon as I'm able. Thanks.

Think you can get us the code for that SES light?

Also, the car won't go into overdrive/lock up until the trans temps exceed 80 degrees, if I remember correctly. So if you get on the highway pretty fast after starting the car in these cold winter temps, it will take a couple minutes for the transmission to reach that temperature.

I will definetly post codes as soon as I can get them read and yes I'm aware that the tranny has to heat up before it locks up. I guess I was wondering what would be the reason for a delayed lockup and what I could do to rectify same. Fluid looks very good and no smell although it hasn't been changed in a while.. Thanks.

Still haven't got codes read however something strange with the SES light. It has gone out again. The common denominator with the SES light going out is that oil level was about quarter or maybe little more low and when I topped it up in both cases drove a few miles and voila the light went out. How can this be as I am not aware of a low oil sensing circuit on these cars? Changed oil this weekend with only 5000 KM on the oil using semi-syn oil filled up and after 300 plus KM's still good. For sure the circumstances were identical in both cases. I will still get codes as soon as I'm able because I would think there should be something stored.

Funeral for my brother is over so finally got codes read and there was nothing current set. In the history we found PO128B Engine coolant sensor and code P1626C theft deterrant signal(hasn't been any issues with this). However we did check temps on the catalytic convertor and rear was only 40 deg warmer than front after warm up. Even if the temp was read in celcius that difference doesn't sound great enough so convertor may be an issue here?
