Transmission woes - Could use advice/opinions

Hi all,

I have a 2001 Bonneville SSEI that has been running mostly fine. On the expressway, it was fine but after taking the off ramp, no power in D or 3 it only revs up. Yet I can start off in 2 and shift manually into 3 and D with no hard shifts but it will slip inbetween 2-3 if I keep my foot on the gas. If I let up during that shift, it will go right into 3rd gear with no problems. I took it into a transmission shop and they told me internal transmission damage and would require a re-manufactured transmission. Fluid was at proper level, slightly dark and slight burned smell. My question is this.... If reverse works fine, and I can start the car off in 1 or 2, shift up into D and all the gears seem to work, wouldn't that indicate some other failure? I feel like there has to be some manual diagnostic versus just pulling codes that can be done to isolate the issue versus just scanning for a code.

I hope someone can shed some light on this for me as I cannot afford $2,400 for a reman transmission and I have a hard time believing that is the only solution. Would it be beneficial to clear the CEL and see what happens? What about dropping the pan, changing fluid and filter? What about adding Seafoam transmission stuff?

Thanks in advance!

And you need this:

I got one over a year ago and it is a great build!
