Hey, anyone out there remember the sudden catastrophic power loss problem of the mid 80's Bonnevilles? I would be cruzin down the highway at speed and suddenly.......total power loss! I'd pull over, wait a few minutes, then restart and it would be fine until the next time when without warning, one month, three months, or whatever dead again. Funny, I never thought of it as a big deal because it would always restart until GM recalled it and fixed-lol! Apparently it caused some accidents-imagine!

Also GM had a problem with the paint pealing off those 80's cars-I got 87 fixed for free totally repainted under one of those "hidden warranties". I was told that they had tried to cut costs by not priming the cars before painting. I was supposed to pay $200 co-pay for the paint but it was Christmas and the dealer waived it. You used to see those pealing paint jobs all over back-in-the-day.

yeah, my 88 SSEi never had a paint problem because it was delivered from the dealership with spots all over the paint and they had to repaint the whole car. And mine used to die like that due to a bad positive terminal on the battery

Yeah mine did that for a couple years till i finally figured it out. The old style magnavox ICM is a poor design and will overheat, especially when getting old. It used to melt the gel inside and short out the coils. Ever since i changed to the ac delco type II coil and ICM i haven't had a problem.
