Will GXPs appreciate in value?

I have a 2005 GXP with 110,000 miles that is still in great shape outside but is beginning to have some mechanical issues that will need some serious bucks. I had the coolant leak that some stop leak fixed, I have a minor head gasket leak that still needs attention... but everything else that you can imagine going wrong around this mileage is set to wear out. That said, I'm considering a new vehicle in the next 6 months to a year and am considering trade in over just parking it, covering it, and restoring it later when fundage is available to do a adequate mechanical going over. My question is do you think that GXPs will ever become desirable on a wider basis, as in, collectible? Maybe even appreciate in value? Anyone have any thoughts? :helpsmilie:

Not for at least 20-30 years, if at all. And even so, not by much.

They're going to continue to depreciate for a few years before levelling off for a long time, then slowly creep up, slightly. I wouldn't count on it to give any returns on investment.

I wouldn't count on it.

Looks at the 92-99 bonnevilles. If there is a clean one to be had they definitely go for more (not a ton) than they did a few years ago.

For instance I bought my 1997 in 2009, with 272k miles on it, granted I put a lot of work in. But I was dumbfounded when someone offered me over 3 times what i paid for it in 2014 with 320k miles.

I think Jerry hit the nail on the head, some are still worth a good chunk. But the real value will be in low miles and super clean.

But if it's something you could see yourself driving 20 years from now. Then by all means, keep it and restore/fix it up.

Having owned Pontiacs since 1969 including some collectibles, in my opinion, the Bonneville GXP will not be a collectible and will not go up in value over time. If you invest more money in one than it is currently worth, you will never recoup your investment unless you keep it and drive it until it dies. The GXP's are holding their value now, but we are dealing with 15 year old technology and as time marches on, there are newer cars that will be more technologically advanced and just as comfortable that people will gravitate to. There will always be an interest in these cars but it is a niche market. You will know they are done when Andrew shutters his doors and renames his business G8's Unlimited. Cosmic, your car is in nice shape and if it does not need any major repairs, consider keeping it and fixing it up. It can go another 50-75,000 miles before the engine is done.

Also look at the 87-91. Attrition hAs done a number on remaining units. I nice Sse from that era stands a chance of successfully bringing in a premium.I'm talking 75k miles garage queen here

The problem with the GXPs is that they were not really a desirable car even when new. I quote Lane here: "cookie cutter FWD corporate platform."

If it makes you happy, keep it. But don't expect to get any money out of it until the next millennium.

Sure they command a premium, and Clay's 94 red SSEi is another good example, but the increase in value is nowhere near enough to justify someone saying "I'm going to keep this car for collectible purposes".

I can't believe I missed that in my original post. :)

I have a different out look on this subject.
First off, the Bonneville GXP was the first to wear the GXP badge.
It was built in very limited numbers. (Compared to the other Bonneville models)
Attrition makes that number even less.
They were a factory designated High Performance version, not your run of the mill car.
It was the last of the true American made, full sized Pontiacs built, with a long and rich history behind it.

And the idea that they are "cookie cutter FWD corporate platform" cars means nothing at all.
The same could have been said about cars like, for example, a 1964 Impala SS, which was built on a "cookie cutter, corporate platform" in its day, but even restored versions of this car are pulling in some big dollars, not just the low mile, survivor cars.

The one thing I do agree with, is the fact that a value of ANY car just doesn't go up over night, it will take decades to see prices rise, and then it will be dictated buy the market at that time.

I remember back in the 70's people buying multiple examples of Special / Limited Edition Corvettes and Trans Ams in hopes to turn a prophet. but it took 30 years to only double their money, in a lot of cases, so you can't go about this thinking you will be rich because of the value of a used car that hasn't had a chance to show just WHAT it will be worth.

If you like the car, keep it, as good ones are hard to find, or let it go and be one of those guys like my dad who always wished he had keep a particular car from his past .

I have the same 1979 Trans Am I bought over 30 years ago, because I never wanted to sell it and be like my dad some day. But it was never because of what it might be worth in the future, it was all because of the car itself. (I'm glad I did hang on to it, have you seen what they are selling for now?")

Just be happy with what ever decision you make, because ultimately, it's you that will have to live with it.

Leon

It's still a FWD, corporate platformed vehicle with a corporate engine that wasn't exactly a tarmac terror in terms of power for a V8, and lacked aftermarket support that generally drives interest in the vehicle. Other than a few here, the car was seen as a half-assed-band-aid attempt to answer Chrysler's Hemi V8 powered, properly driven platformed, sedans.

That doesn't mean it's a bad car by any stretch as we all know it's a solid, roomy, comfortable sedan. But this will not be something that sets collectors hearts afire despite not being a big sale volume car in 2004 & 2005.

Someone on GMForums got these numbers from Hi Performance Pontiac...

GXP sales;
2004 = 2,420
2005 = 4,193

Total Bonneville sales;
2004 = 29,852
2005 = 10,037

Interesting to see that almost half of all Bonnevilles in 2005 were GXP models.

I definitely see GXP models at least commanding a big premium over even a comparable SSEi in the future. I don't necessarily think it will have any major appreciation in value though, there is just too many other cars out there that I think people would rather have, the G8 just to name one.

Pardon me for not drinking the G8 koolaid.

Ha, GXP, roomy. Ha. Hahaha.

Anyways.

I will have to agree with Leon and the kool-aid though. Short of the GXP G8s, don't see those being collectible in the future either. In either case, Bonneville or G8, these cars should be kept if they make you happy, with a return on your investment being a secondary expectation, which may not be realized.

Honestly, pretty much ANY car is a HORRIBLE ROI. If you consider the returns you could get from a mutual fund or investing your money elsewhere you will have a HUGE return compared to a car. Over decades that is.

I am definitely not saying that the G8 will be a collectable, just saying that 30 years down the road I think the G8 will be more desirable then the Bonneville GXP which will still pull a hefty premium over even a ridiculously nice SSEi.
