Caliper Time...

One project for the Memorial Day weekend was to repaint the calipers on Sirius.

First, gotta get ‘er in the air:

I painted the calipers several years ago using a hi-temp spray bomb. They were looking pretty shabby:

Used a brush-on caliper paint kit this time. The kit comes with some brake cleaner, pigment, hardner, and a brush. The brush in the kit is just a cheap acid brush and, while it’s adequate, I recommend going to a hobby store and getting a larger better brush. Or do what I did and throw a chic-flick in the blu-ray player. When your wife gets into it deep, sneak into her craft room and steal one of her craft brushes. I was pretty impressed with the outcome and actually like it better than the spray. I put 2 coats on each caliper, and I think there was enough paint to put 4 coats on:

Red looks really good on calipers, especially with a black car. I went with blue again because everyone does red and I also wanted a little more subtle look. Red slaps you in the face and says look at me; blue winks at you and says hey, I’m down here. Rear caliper:

I'll try to remember to snap some bright sunlight pictures - they stand out a little more in the bright sun. :)

Gotta love maintenance time :) this is the exact reason our cars will far outlast our neighbors cars, we take care of them!

For some reason I never though Sirius was an 03. Nonetheless, it looks great!

This is the kit I used on the calipers, in case anyone else is thinking about painting theirs. I think it was about $20 on Amazon. I believe there was enough product to put 4 coats on my calipers (note that I only painted the area you can see – it’s not a show car so I saw no purpose in painting the backside), but once you dump in the hardner, you have 4-6 hours before the paint begins to cure so it’s a one-shot deal.

SIDENOTE:
Painting my calipers turned out to be a fortuitous project as I discovered my rear brake pads were just about toast. Worn enough that I’ve grounded the car until the new pads arrive, just to be safe. Have YOU checked YOUR brakes lately?

And one more thing…see that mess on the concrete in picture #3? That’s from the brake cleaner dripping off the brakes when I sprayed it on. #-o I recommend putting something down to keep this crap off your driveway if you do this. I had to use another can of brake cleaner to get this mess up and it still left a little bit of a stain on the drive. Sometimes I could kick myself.

Red FTW but the blue looks good and compliments the colour on his plates.

As much as I liked the red on my GXP, I dig the blue, it's subtle and you never see blue calipers...

The calipers on my blue Firebird have been coated blue for 35 years.
