New engine mount! YAY!

Post by Ludichris »

So my front drivers side engine/transmission mount needed replaced, like most of ours eventually need, and I got it done Saturday. What a HUGE difference! I didn't know something didn't "feel" right, until after it got replaced, and then....whoa.....way more responsive on the throttle, and my fuel economy went UP by a noticeable margin. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, but I'd venture a guess and say that it's because all the horsepower wasn't being transferred to the transaxle any time torque was applied - some of it was being wasted by the movement of the engine due to the bad mount (i.e. off stop lights, stop signs, stop-n-go traffic, etc.). Once the mount was replaced, I happened to have a 400 mile round trip to go on the next day, about 80% highway/20% city driving, and I netted 33 MPG for that tank! Impressive, since on that same trip (that I do every single month), I would usually get 29 MPG MAX. Anyhow, just thought I'd share. Get that mount replaced if your engine is moving too much...it makes a difference! OH! And of course the shifts between gears smoothed out some, too. That's my two cents.

Was it knocking when you went into gear or Took off?

I feel like the fuel economy is a red-herring. Probably the switch back to summer fuel more than anything. I went from 18-19 MPG all winter to 20.5 pretty consistently the last couple tanks.
Bye Bye:

Not really, no. I didn't experience that. It didn't feel like anything was "wrong" until I fixed it and it felt better, but I think the mount was probably bad when I got the car 40K miles ago, because it never really got any "worse", you know? And I remember when I got it, thinking that it didn't ride as smooth as previous Bonnevilles that I owned. It rides a lot smoother now.

I know there are lots of variables, but I am a FREAK about my fuel economy, just keeping an eye on it, calculating it on every fill up, using the gauge needle (which I know isn't linear and isn't accurate, but it's just something to go by, tank after tank), using mile markers on that 400 mile trip I take every month (200 one way), etc., and I don't think I've ever gotten 33 MPG over the course of a whole tank on that trip before. I did just replace the tranny fluid and filter, fresh oil and oil filter too, so maybe that all contributed, but man...if I didn't have a couple small towns to drive through, and a little bit of stop and go, I could have cleared 35 MPG easily.
