Common issue?

I'm in need of help with my head unit. It works great and has the equalizer and the cassette player on it. The problem, is that when I turn the radio up, it turns the volume down. And when I turn it down, it still turns down! This is solved by VERY slowly turning the knob to get it to do what you want. But, for obvious reasons this is annoying. I had a friend with a Gran Prix that did the exact same thing. By the way, the vehicle is a 1998 Bonneville SE. Any idea if this is common? If so, how do I fix it?

Haven't tried this but it sounds about right. It's what I'd try for an erratic pot. Haven't taken an encoder apart, yet.
