Nothing like a small road trip to shake out the flaws...

About a 270 mile trip, in the 99 SLE to take my wife to the Dr today, then to another town picking up our grandson. It doesnt see much road duty as a rule. Got a wheel bearing humming, slight shake/shimmy and then the transmission went thru a bad mood after the highway driving with rough shifting and a low, RPM based whine. Started several blocks before the clinic. Parked in a parking garage that had to have been well below freezing, got our business done and when we came back out the rest of the trip was fine. My springtime list just got longer though...shes only got 90k miles now and I'd like to keep it tip-top. Whats the general opinion on trans fluid brands these days?

Trans fluid is trans fluid, dex 3 is all you need. I recommend installing a shift kit and some lucas trans fix at the same time. The bigger issue is to make sure you get a good filter. Don't settle for the $13 filter and gasket package. Get the AC Delco or WIX filter. And the pan gasket is re-useable; do not use cork or rubber because the 4t65 (trans) fluid pan isn't designed to pinch them properly so they don't seal unless you over-torque them. If your gasket is damaged, Fel-Pro makes one that should work for a reasonable price. If you get the itch, toss a network of small neodymium magnets in the fluid pan, it will help keep the magnetic metals out of the filter to begin with.

Dex6 mixes with Dex3 and runs much cooler and better. I would drop the pan and filter and put like 8 qts of Dex6 in.

Looks like AC DELCO is sold at Rock Auto. Home Run there! Looking at TE Performance for the shift kit also. Soon as spring shows up :)
