Cleaner / Sealant for Plastic Trim & Steering Wheels

Post by Dean »

What products do you use to clean & preserve your plastic trim? This is a general question but if anyone has had their windshields cloud up from film that appears to be from their trim "evaporating," have you found anything that works to stop that in particular?

For vinyl/foam steering wheels, what do you recommend for a cleaner and sealant as they start to corrode? I was going to try a Polyurethane/Mineral Spirits mixture I prepared for my headlamps - is this a mistake? I am afraid that my hands might stick to the wheel if I do this but I haven't found an alternative short of those steering wheel covers which I don't care for. I also might use this on my trim as the urethane has UV protection which might resolve the film issue.

On the 2000 Bonneville with leather, some of the door trim appears to be the same "leather" material. Should I just use the same Lexol leather cleaner on this stuff or is it different? (don't worry, I don't plan on trying the urethane on my trim in this car).

So help me out guys - if I am about to make a mistake with this urethane, what should I use instead?

I use Invisible Glass to clean, it doesn't damage the trim, just removes the dirt/dust. I wouldn't use anything with harsh cleaners or ammonia, though...

I definitely would not use polyurethane. The smell alone would be terrible, especially on hot summer days. That and that plastic/vinyl isn't meant to be sealed, and I could only see misery in your future for doing that...

If your wheel is starting to degrade, the only good solution is to get a new one. I'd bet harofreak00 has one in your color, probably even leather-wrapped compared to your likely non-leather wheel.

Agree on the urethane. You are probably going to end up regretting it if you go that route.

Definitely wouldn't use urethane. The stuff on the doors is vinyl and not real leather. I've used windex on it to great effect. Haha
