I took my altenator off when I did mine. It makes it easier to move around in there, and maneuver the tensioner. Be prepared if you haven't changed the elbows before, that they're going to break off either in the block or in the tensioner itself. It's normal, just because they deteriorate over time. Use either a small pick, or you can bend a small flathead screwdriver to pry and scrape the old pieces out of the block and the tensioner. There are factory aluminum replacements now from Doorman. make sure you use those elbows when you replace these, otherwise you'll be doing the job again shortly after the plastic ones leak again haha. Ask me how I know. I believe there may be some pictures on how to remove them in the Upper Intake replacement thread in Techinfo. If not, look on youtube, and you'll find a few videos on how to replace the elbows on the Grand Prix's. The motor is the same, just the items around it will be a little different (coolant tank won't be in the way, etc.).
Good luck!

I'm redoing mine after 3 years of Dorman plastic. It's the o-ring that's seeping after the mechanic did my UIM/Lower gasket. I'm using the aluminum elbows I got on Amazon.
Here's a well done video.
