Runs great, dies without warning, starts right back up

Post by Steelworker26 »

Hey all,

My 2000 SSEI is running like a champ till about 3 weeks ago. It still runs great but now it will just die at all speeds including idle. I can shift to neutral and start the car right back up and it runs fine again. I am not throwing any codes. I changed out my Crankshaft positioning sensor because this is sliiiiiightly similar to what happened last time but this did not seem to fix it. Some days on my 20 minute commute no issues, other days it will do it 5 times.

I switched out relays and no change. In both cases - CPS/Relays - maybe it was ok for a day or two then it started doing it again. But it can go two days now with no issue and then it will do it 3 x in 20 minutes.

There is no hesitation nor any sputtering. Just dies right now. Then it starts right back up with me turning the key.

It seems the RPM gauge drops before the battery warning light/gauges when it shuts off.

I changed out the MAF about two years ago. In that case it would die, and it did not want to start up until the next day unless I depressed the accelerator to the floor, then it would run horribly and hot.

Hope you all have seen this before. Thanks for any assistance.

I'm 80% sure that it's the Ignition Control Module. Get one from a salvage yard.

Check your battery terminals and make sure they are clean and tight. This once happened to me in my 88 Bonneville SSE.

Maf is another suspect even though you changed it a couple years ago. What brand did you get?

The Maf is an autozone replacement CARDONE and it was about 2 years that I replaced it. Of course I have recently read on this club that it is pretty much a no-no. AC delco is what I should have gone with.

If it is the ICM, I have been "playing" with my key while driving to see if I could get it to die. Is this something I could cause to let me know if it is the ICM?

No codes is irritating.

An hour after I wrote the OP the car died on me and it took 45 minutes before it restarted.

I pulled the MAF and cleaned it with MAF cleaner then pulled the positive lead connection at the fuse box and cleaned that as well, both looked clean before I did anything.

The ICM was changed out by a dealer three years ago. Cleaned the battery terminals as well. They looked clean as well before I did anything.

Car won't start now. What is odd is before when I turned the key to on I would be able to hear the fuel pump kick on. Now I don't hear that at all.

Changed out the mini fuse with one that I know works and verified that the micro fuse is good.

The fuel pump is the original.

see if you have 12v at the fuel pump connector when you cycle the ignition on.. If you do, you know what the problem is..lol

The fuel pump access plate is in the trunk..

Just got back from being towed to my garage.

Walter the driver climbed under the back with a hammer and hit the gas tank a few times and the car started right up. Said the brushes on the motor are just worn enough (Origional pump with 180,000 miles on it). I will order me a pump tonight from Rock Auto.

Thanks All
