Fuel Pump Ass. Replacement?

Post by donn188 »

So I replaced my fuel level sender a couple months back and rather than fixing it I killed it. Decided that I'm just going to drop a new fuel pump in and be done with it. I can get the entire assembly new off eBay for $50 shipped, just wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this? (aside from me being a cheap a**)

Figure if I drop a new assembly in should be good to go for a solid 2+ years I'd hope. Anyone done this? Thanks in advance fellow Bonnevillers :) :woowoo:

Honestly I would trust an old factory pump that tests out to the right pressure over a complete pump and sending unit for $50. I would be looking at the sweep arm unit again for the sending unit to make sure everything looks good.

:btruestory:

Those $50 pumps are sure to give you sending unit issues, as well as probably fuel pressure drop concerns that will cause you to knock at the worst times.

Replace it with a stock wrecker donor that has a clean looking sending unit, and then slap on a racetronix or similar pump. You will appreciate the improvement from that small cost increase, and have a far better chance of ensuring fuel pressure and delivery to prevent a chipped piston.

I figured thats the response I'd get lol when I replaced the sending unit I realized that thed clip they sent me to attach it to the assembly was not the correct one and I was tired of screwing around by that time so I held it in place and superglued it (very well I might add) to the assembly.

So not only is the sender prob. never coming off the assembly but something was different about the connectors too so I just cut the wires from the old one and soldered them to the new one. I'll find a used one and go from there. Thanks :)

I got a Delphi on rock auto with pump for like 130, if you want to spend a little more you will get a new pump and sender and a name brand. I think mine needed a different connector installed as well IIRC... dunno why but seems like they changed the plugs.

That was my problem - the colors were all the same but not the plugs, and since the sender wasn't coming off by the time I had realized they werent the same I just snipped the new connectors off and wired to the factory connections.

Might be a bit late since you did a bit of wire snippin, but I found this, and was pretty amazed what he did here for $40 and a bit of time.

I actually used that video when I did the change, I just didn't take the time to write down the wire procedures he did because I figured the new one would plug right in and didn't have the laptop handy when it didn't :/

my gauge was erratic and tried some extra techron and it did not fix it, so I replaced the pump on my 03 with 160k. I used spectra from rock auto. I had a real tough time getting the fuel retainer/lock ring out, but finally pounded it out with a screwdriver and hammer. I had to put a new lock ring in. Also the old pump just about fit through the hole with some interference, the plastic must have swelled. Spectra requires a new electrical connector, which I did not like, but bought it anyway. I soldered the new one in instead of the connectors supplied. Buttoned it up and all is well. Next time I will look to get a lock ring removal tool. The free rental at autozone is not for GM. Being in the trunk that long was not fun. Maybe a tank removal is not that bad and then working on it on the bench. I hope to not have to replace again and I hope the spectra unit lasts. Also the original sender unit showed no signs of a coating or corrosion on the electrical contact, so the problem must be invisible to the naked eye.

Well I actually got a "high performace" pump off eBay and after I had it dropped in and hooked up it has worked flawlessly. Came with a lifetime warranty too so if it ever fails, I'll warranty it!
