I have been contemplating getting some new mirrors to put on my Batmobile (bedliner sprayed the entire car black)..could I get some tips on how to remove the old mirrors with causing minimal amount of damage to door panel (drivers side especially with the mirror adjuster) and exterior? Thanks! oh, and here's a link to the new mirrors..

Please tell me what you think of this idea..I'm also in the process of replacing my fog lights with dark yellow ones to really give it a batmobile feel :) Thanks everyone. Dark_Knight

You can't use those mirrors unless you like them pointing down like droopy dog ears. Just go to the junkyard and get some Buick or Olds mirrors. Also get the wiring harness connector for the mirrors so you can make it plug and play.

Here's what I did:

Thanks! I saw your mirror mod and i like it..i might do that but i really like the sleeknesz of these new mirrors..i was looking at the mojnting angle on a newer camaro and thought about the angle of the bonney door and i think i can overcome that by possibly giving the mirror mounting an angle cut and i could overcome the droopiness..if i have to i will use some sheet metal screws like the previous owner did when passenger mirror cracked lol..how would i get the mirrors off to begin with without breaking them? :) thanks

You need to pull the door panels off to get to the (2) 10mm nuts that are accessed through holes in the inner door skin.

Well hell if i have to do that i think ill replace the door panels as well ;) lol would i be able to upgrade to newer year of door panels if i can find an SE model? If not i will just play it safe and only replace the driver side panel which i have found on alot of bonneys gets loose over time

Any 92-99 panels should be interchangeable, but they'll all be the same design... the only possible upgrade would be if you went with a leather door panel, if you dont' already have one...

Panels are different between 92-95 and 96-99, with the later years being the better ones in fit, finish, and function.

Really? I guess I thought they were all the same. My mistake.

Okay so here we go..The new Camaro mirrors are ON! :) I pulled the door panels off and on my drivers side there was a loose window mount bracket so I tightened that back up. You were definitely right about the droopy dog ears thing and I took that into consideration. I used a peanut grinder after I got the mirrors off to enlarge the holes on both sides. I had a buddy make me two plates with the 3 mirror holes drilled into them. Got the plates mounted with some sheet metal screws and sealed the plates to the doors. I ended up getting two door panels from a 95 which seemed to be actually sturdier than my 96, specifically on the handles. I have gotten a few compliments on them already and I LOVE how they are angled slightly upwards..Here's a few pics :)

After cut..figuring out how I wanted angle to be

Image

Angle of plate could have been curved a bit but leaving plate straight made mirrors angle up more which is what I was wanting

Shot from front..(oh yeah, I redid the fog lights with yellow)

Yeeeaaaahhhh, does not do anything for me at all. They dont look right in my opinion and not digging the way they are mounted at all, either. a little more planning and execution could have made them look better.

Was going for a different look and I'm liking it so far..these mirrors are sooo much bigger than the old ones which is the main reason i got them..(If I would have had an oxy-acetalene torch and figured out a different way to get them mounted completely flush I might have done that but I'm really liking the angle of the mirrors like this.) ...Also, I re-edited the post..did the pics show up?

Using modeling clay (like fimo just don't bake it), plaster of paris, WD-40 or vaseline, rattle-can clear coat and polyurethane casting compound (any shore D harness) would have allowed you to pull off a seamless execution. All you have to do is form the clay to be the base, use a simple steel plate and drill the door as needed to make the new mirror 'fit' the holes in the door panel (the plate is mounted inside the panel, never seen). Once the clay base/adapter is perfect, you make a plaster of paris 2-part mold of the clay part. Once it dries, remove clay and cast in PU, once that cures you have the perfect adapter, paintable and sandable, made of polyurethane that is very tough & chemical resistant, etc...

It's a weekend project. The plaster is cheap, modeling clay would be cheap (you don't need much based on what I see), WD-40 is cheap, spray paints are cheap and you can buy a tube of polyurethane adhesive (a sandable construction adhesive/sealant from a caulk gun works, must be painted after) cheap. Notice a theme here? Cheap.

There are many ways of doing this, I think this way (a lot of time waiting for things to dry) is the cheapest and a good DIY method. If it interests you, look into 2-piece mold designs (or ask).

Hey Figenzz Here is a link to my photobucket! http://s1065.beta.photobucket.com/user/ ... 5.jpg.html

the car is bedliner sprayed so its a flat black, I'm thinking about doing a two-tone now and doing the top a different color or maybe just giving it another layer...watcha think??
