if found both of these
To reprogram your keyless entry system for a new key fob:
1) Turn ignition to OFF.
2) Ground pin 1 of the Data Link Connector (black 16-pin connector under dash driver's side). Pin 4 of this connector is a ground, so placing a jumper wire between pins 1 & 4 will accomplish this. Grounding pin 1 tells the system you are getting ready to reprogram it.
3) Close all the doors.
4) Turn the key to ACC, then back to OFF. The power locks will lock/unlock. The system is now ready to be programmed.
5) Press a button on your key fob.
6) If you have two key fobs, press a button on the second fob within 1 minute of pressing a button on the first one. Both must be programmed at the same time. If you only have one remote, press a button on it 2 more times to signal that you only have one.
7) The doors will lock/unlock to signal that the codes were received.
8) Remove the connection between pins 1 & 4.

I found that the power locks locked and unlocked immediately upon jumping pin 1 to pin 4. The system was ready to be programmed. steps 3 & 4 were unnecessary.
PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
TRANSMITTER & RAC PROGRAMMING
NOTE: Following procedure must be performed when replacing RAC
module or either transmitter.
1) Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Use a fused jumper
wire and connect Data Link Connector (DLC) terminals 4 (Black wire)
and 8 (Black/White wire). See Fig. 1. Door locks, fuel door and trunk
lid release should activate in approximately 2 seconds.
2) Press any button on one transmitter. Door locks, fuel door
and trunk lid release should activate in approximately 2 seconds.
First transmitter is now programmed. Repeat this step using other
transmitter. If only one transmitter is being used, disconnect jumper
wire from DLC. If module does not accept programming, see
RAC MODULE CANNOT BE PROGRAMMED under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

Does the new remote have the same numbers on the back as the old one? They need to be the same IIRC. Don't you have a trunk release inside the car (button on the door)?

The button inside may be disabled by the "Valet" switch. It allows you to disable that button. The valet switch is in the trunk. Once you get in there, check it.

Ok some what off topic, I was trying to do this to my 98 ssei and there is not a connector in at the #1 pin. Does this mean I do not have keyless entry? I am going to go through my RPOs later but I just thought I would ask. I haven't tried the second set on instructions, pins 4 and 8, but I will a little later. Too cold to be out there right now!

I recently went through this several times. I had bought two replacement ebay remotes to replace one damaged and get another one for junior to have a set of keys and remote. However I had failed to include wife's remote last time. She was very unhappy at Walmart last weekend when it didn't work and she said the key wouldn't go into the door and it was 10 degrees and windy. I had to go out and open car. She rarely takes the older car.

I learned the setup works just as described.
A. hold the remote keys for 30 seconds--it seems like a LONG time
B. be sure battery in remote is not run down

On my 98 Buick the slot 5 is empty, so there's no way to hook up #4 and #8 wrong even if I reversed the number pattern from right to left. Working upside down looking up under the dash I was afraid I'd reverse them.

The instructions in my 1998 LeSabre factory service manual say to use #4 and #8 and to hold the lock AND unlock buttons down for 30 seconds.

Ok, I tried doing this on my wife's 2000 SE. I have the whole pig tail but of the 16 slots, only 4, 5, 16 and one more on the bottom have a connector. Making it difficult to jump slot 4-8 and/or 1-4. She has keyless, but lost the original remote then had the dealer try to program a new one and couldn't. I figured wrong IIRC # and they just couldn't figure it out. But we found the original (the one that worked) and here I am. So two questions, am I retarded and just not getting something. Also I just assumed that the DLC is the same as the OBD II connector, am I correct?

did you ever figure this out? I have the exact same problem - nothing in pin 1 or 8 - none of the directions that I have found work - I have a fob that works but it is old and worn out so I wanted to replace it with a new one - never dreamed I would have this much difficulty. You are writing about the exact same issue I am having so I thought I would ask if you ever resolved the problem.

what has worked in the past when replacing key fobs.

1) buckle all seatbelts and close all the doors.
2) turn the key from off to acc 5 times
3) then test

note: this has worked on stock key fob systems on a 2004 focus, and a honda civic.

You're looking at the diagram upside down. I initially had that problem when reprogramming my remotes. Figured it out after only 20-30 tries. #-o
