Is there something typical or a good way to troubleshoot why my cooling fans won't come on? First noticed when I got the DIC message that the A/C was shutting down due to hot engine. I was almost to the red on the temp gage. I parked and let it cool down before driving home. I noticed that if I was moving above 30 MPH, my temp was fine. Stopping at stop lights, caused temps to start rising, but would start to drop as soon as I got moving again. I figured this was something to do with the fan. Once home, I checked and fan not running (A/C turned on, engine up to temp and ambient air temp over 90 degrees). Both fuses checked out ok. All of the relays in the fuse block seemed very hot (both fuse blocks, under hood and under back seat), but not sure if that is a problem or not. Where would be my next step?

Re: overheating - fan not running
I now have let the car cool off completely. Relays are cool to the touch now. Started car and turned air on, fans work fine. Electrical problem that heated up the relays?? Anyone have any similar problems? All of the relays were very hot when I first started working on the problem. Hot enough that you wouldn't want to or able to keep your hand on them.

could be the coolant temp switch

The fans dont turn on until 240 degrees so there is most likely nothing wrong with them. My fuse block also gets very hot, relays are pretty much an electric heater.

Re: overheating - fan not running
The temp sensor was one of my original thoughts, but when the fans didn't come on with the A/C, I had dismissed that. Was I mistaken to dismiss that?
I was approaching the red on the temp gage, so fan should have been running (especially when I had A/C on). Eventually, the DIC told me it was turning off the air due to hot engine temp.

It does not matter if the a/c is running the fans don't care. I do not know the what the temperate of the car is at when it is near the red. I'm sure someone on here knows.madisonguy wrote:The temp sensor was one of my original thoughts, but when the fans didn't come on with the A/C, I had dismissed that. Was I mistaken to dismiss that?

Re: overheating - fan not running
temp sensor is a pretty cheap and easy to switch out.
