water/methanol injection

Post by deano55 »

I am thinking of a water/methanol injection set up rather than a I/C on my car. Read enough about innercoolers so would like some info from ones that are running w/m injection. I know theres a few on hefe so dont be shy about answering.

Not a whole lot of 3800 people run it, but it does work. I think the main drawback is that you can't place the nozzles the optimum distance from the intake ports after the supercharger. The methanol strips the coating off the rotors, so a post blower spray is best. I've seen nozzles in the ends of the lim.

I've even been putting some thought into it lately with as big a pain as its been to get the intercooler set up.

Here's my thought on how to run the setup....

1) Take intake manifold, drill hole right under the MAP/boost control/fuel pressure regulator port. It'll be at the front (accessory) side of the mani.
2) Tap said hole....giggity.
3) Run a metal tube lengthways inside the mani. Terminate with a "y", with a fogger nozzle on each branch.
4) Connect the supply tube.

It works in my mind. But my mind tends to be...unreliable.

Oh, didnt know its hard on the coating? I just am not likeing the heater core idea under my super charger. I have been talking to Intense amd they say testing shows a fair amount of restriction, so then a pulley size drop is done to make up the difference in prressure/boost drop, no you end up with the same heat you had before.

An intercooler does present a restriction but the cooling of the charge air far outweighs that restriction. I've never heard of anyone not gaining power with a proper intercooler.

The tube and branch fogger setup could work, but id be afraid of having that in the manifold waiting to come apart or somehow become misaimed. Also, the water/meth mixture needs time to absorb heat (the whole point of the system), so putting the nozzles at either end of the plenum will fill the whole plenum with the mist and hopefully absorb as much heat as possible.

I think Intense was saying you have to pulley down one size to get the flow you had before you had the intercooler?

The two main supports of this are no longer on the forum. 2000Silverbullet is banned, and willwren has stepped away.

I musta missed something that was behind the scenes but back on topic.....

Also the W/M injection bottle is only like 2gal(?). So pretty limited on use.

IIRC Paul's was 2 quarts, at least his first one. Good for a half a dozen passes, or 20 minutes of spirited driving, IIRC.

The diesel guys run as big as 7 gallons, but that's gonna eat up trunk space...

IIRC Paul was rigging that up. He rigged another pump up to refill his reservoir for the W/M, so he could keep the washer function. Just don't use the winter blend or "bug remover" stuff in the windshield washer res...

Wtf?
When did this happen?!?

Basically will said that he felt that it was there to cover up an inherent issue , that being heat. Its a band aide to a flow related problem. An intercooler is a more reliable solution that does not need to be refilled....

2kSB , used his everyday , (probably filled it everyday too LOL) , and he did use it to allow him to pulley down. IDRC how he had it plumbed though. It worked reliably for him though.

I would think you could easily have it gravity feed into the res. You'd keep the washer function and the low level warning light.

Its not uncommon at all to use meth injection on a daily driver. If you use either a boost switch or a wot switch, how often would it actually kick in? Personally I wouldn't totally rely on it though. Id rather have it there as an option in hotter weather or if I want to pop on a smaller pulley to suck more babies into my blower.

Paul's car was a "toy", he had like 40k on it in 10 years. IIRC he drove his Firebird more often....

I agree with it being a 'band aide'
