Strange burning smell and P0108 code

I changed a low beam light on the drivers side yesterday morning, the bulb receptacle looked a little melted/burnt on one side. I plugged in the new bulb and it lit right up. So I figured I would change our the bulb receptacle later. Then I drove it about 13 miles yesterday evening to go to dinner. On the way home I started to smell a burning plastic smell, it was getting stronger, after about 6 miles the check engine light turned on. I stopped, checked under the hood for flames or smoke, and saw nothing but smelled the burnt plastic. The engine light stayed on as I drove home. This morning I went to CarQuest to read the engine code and it came up P0108 MAP/BARO circuit High Input. I reset the code and drove home the engine light stayed off. Then about 20 minutes ago I drove my wife to an appointment and the engine light came back on, I don't know the code yet. But my question is when a MAP sensor goes bad does it burn out and give off a burnt plastic smell? And how can I test to see if it is bad?
Or any other ideas concerning this are welcome, I realize the burned out low beam light just might be a coincidence. The car is a 1996 Bonneville SE with about 178,000 mile on it.
Regards,
James
