Rear ended an SUV, pissed and scarred at the same time.

Post by Boreas »

Left work early to avoid the afternoon disaster, but it was already starting. Roads barely cleaned. Came up to an intersection, white van in front of SUV stopped (amazingly rather well), then he stopped. I was several car lengths behind, and I hit the brake, but the ABS was buzzing. I couldnt stop at all, no traction. HIt the SUV maybe at 5 mph. Everyone is ok (supposedly), his SUV sustained no damage. I have a cracked bumper and a bent hood. Car is least of my worries, because he goes that his wife(ederly couple) he claims she used to work as a police officer and once got hit and got knocked 50 feet in the air. Says its a thing been going on for years for her now. I asked if she's ok, he goes wont know until tomorrow. The impact wasnt even that bad, maybe 5 mph.

Im devastated about my car, but im more worried about them, and getting sued and whatnot. He said because there was no damage to his car, we could part ways, but I dont know if it was right or not, but I called the police so a report could be filed. He came out and said dont worry we wont sue you, we dont need the money. That tipped me off to call the police and have something official on record so that no funny stuff will happen later.

Im shaken right now. Have not told mom and dad (yes, still live with them) yet. DOnt know how to break the news.

I just want to crawl into a hole and die right now. Of all people I had to hit today it was a person who got messed up from before.

Sucks to hear it dude! Don't worry, everything will get settled eventually, just be glad everyone's OK. It could ALWAYS be worse, I've learned that! :btruestory:

I dont care about the car right now. Im just praying to God they dont come back and sue me or anything like that, that is my worst fear. I had several car lengths in front of me and I just plain couldn't stop. I was blowing my horn on my way to the hit.

Don't you have insurance? Shouldn't that cover a lawsuit IF something comes about.

Lawsuit? I don't see it, but you were there...I mean, it's not like you woke up this morning and said "I'm going to go rear-end somebody" They're called "accidents" for a reason.

Exactly it is called accident for a reason, and you did what you could. You notified law enforcement and it is documented. They can not go back on that claim especially with only your vehicle having the damage. The biggest thing is everyones ok, and I am sure that will be the first thing your parents will ask once you tell them. They'll be proud of how you handled yourself. Keep your head up

Alex, just relax and breathe. You didn't mean to do this, and they're not gonna jump right to a lawsuit. They will go through your insurance. You did get their information, right?

Sounds like it's time for a set of snow tires...

You did all the right things, you manned up and accepted responsibility, you told the police and I'm guessing they won't be taking any more action. Tell your folks asap, learn what you can from your experience and be glad nobody got hurt.

You can buy another Bonnie and SUV, you and the couple in the other car are unique and irreplaceable.

Accidents happen as has been said, that's why we are required to have insurance in the developed world.

You should feeL the way you do if you had run her over, not rear ended a car at 5mph she was in. they actualy sound like a nice old couple....buy her some flowers if you have their address or send them a card saying "im sorry that van caused us to meet this way".....

unless you dont have insurance, you should be thanking the good lord you did, that what its for. as far as not wanting to use it,that makes no sense , your paying to be protected against what your stressing about!!!!!ONLY STRESS WHEN YOU HIT SOMEONE AND YOU DONT HAVE COVERAGE!!! lol

Thanks guys I appreciate it. The elderly couple is fine, especially the lady whose neck I was worried about, I was more worried about that than anything. I was actually thinking of sending a bouquet of flowers as an apology and also as a thank you since she was a former cop.

Gonna have to pay the ticket and shop around for estimates this week. From what I found it is its just the bumper and hood, the side marker is undamaged, just needs to be popped back in after the bumper first gets popped in:

*shoot* happens. And they cant do anything as far as suing because they didnt want medical attention. But good call on the police report, now you just have to pay your lower deductible. I had a deer run me off the road a few years ago but since there was no evidence of the dear and no police report, I had to pay big.

No *shoot*. They are the worst *fook* tires when it comes to snow, and im sorry that I bought them. Tire Rack had good ratings on them, which is why I got them to begin with. Now im gonna have to look for spare rims to mount winter tires on.

I don't remember if you posted on here about them, but I could/would/should've steered you away from them. Live and learn, I guess...

Yes... good call on getting winter tires. Yokohama Avids are great in the wet/dry, but might as well be summer tires as soon as any snow falls... they are a very performance-biased "all season" tire.
