Tranny Death Signal?

Post by nunesjeff »

Today I backed out of the barn no problem to the street and felt fine but wouldn't move forward till like 1900-2500rpms... I thought it was just cold & thick trans fluid cause it was 29 last night so I let warm up checked fluid clean not real dark smells good no stinkage I just got home it didn't do it at all in town and now I'm home sitting in the drivers seat on the android phone it will barely crawled over the gravel build up under the barn door feels like a 10,000 pound boat in Drive... Is this the Tranny Death Signal ? :dontknow: :banghead:

Hi,

I 'm sorry you are having trouble but your description says it pretty clearly. I think I can say that your discs in your trans are worn out. This is how it happened for me: I tried the adjustable transmission modulator (~$17, 15 min install) and that didn't fix it. I flushed mine which for an old transmission is not the best thing to do as draining the fluid actually washes out the grit that was giving just enough to keep the frictions grabbing. I tracked down a gallon of this stuff called varnasolve which is intended for industrial grade air compressors. You're supposed to run it for a few hours with the varna solv in there and that supposedly will clear the varnish off the frictions and let whats left grab. There just wasn't much for it, I had to rebuild my trans...Which turned out well, I learned a lot and was happy for it afterward. Took me a year and $2K You can rebuild or put a used one in or have a shop do it for ~$3-4K. Used can be a great deal if you find it w/ low miles otherwise you're just gonna be back at square one.

Another thing to try is the trans fuse under the drivers dash. Undo your trans connector, check for corrosion or damage and reseat. Also do scan for trouble codes first too. Hope this was helpful

Note if you pull the injectors to obserbe fuel delivery...make sure you leave the plugs in and disconnect the ign. Believe me

Checked all fuses, Not Flashing Codes, I posted & Let cool It just drove strong to town & back again & didn't do it this time so weird... Could a Torque Converter Go bad like heats up stop working hot but then work again cooled? I had a OLD friend with a 93 and his would drive like 3 miles tops get warm & quit moving in forward & have to let cool again... His clutches were toast too & broke the Diff pin in the spiders...

Lucas Transmission fix could help. If the slipping is only infrequent now the Lucas might make a difference.

EDIT: I don't think it would be the TCC. But I don't really know how the TCC works :dontknow:

If it was me I'd try it again. What do you have to lose besides $10 vs $2K? :)
BTW did your trans w/ the broken mounts give hard shifts in all gears?

Yeah true that lol It did shift sloppy and rocked back & forth bad just driving it normal but if u got on it hard it didn't so much till u let off and u could feel it drop back into its place... I think the right side motor mount is weak too but sounds like I have a bigger fish to fry... I'll do my own work and break open a few at pick a part with a 100 day warranty to get it by for a few and have my tranny guy do it in his garage... It Would be the same guy that done Zilla's Transmission but outta his house shop after I bring it to him

well your info on the broken mount is helpful to me. I get a hard kick in my 1-2 shift and I had wondered if it was a mount-guess it's my trans. Pretty cool mechanic Jeff (?)

I was gonna say I could help. My Sister lives in Scio and Its been a good while since I've been there. It would be great to meet you and talk Bonneville. Problem of course is time and money (as always)
