Speed Guage Not Accurate *HELP*

Hello Pontiac Bonneville Club,

I have a 2005 Pontiac Bonneville SLE, im having trouble with my speed guage. Instead of it being at 0mph on idle, its on 30mph lol. Once i pass the 30mph mark, it starts working and reads everything over 30mph. But when i slow down back to 0mph, it gets stuck on the 30mph mark.

Also my battery guage goes back in forth from the middle to max. My RPM and Oil guages are fine.

I got pulled over by a State Trooper today for going 70 on a 50, and got a Ticket :sadeyz: ...... and my nonfunctional guage was my excuse. The officer said if I fix the guage within 3 weeks and show it to any officer and get a signature, then he will erase the ticket. Im trying to fix it now but dont know where to start. I thought i'd try to fix it myself with the help from Bonneville owners such as you.

Im really lookin forward to hearing from you guys.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like something mechanical in the instrument panel itself. Replace the panel and swap the chip so the mileage reads correctly.

:stupid:

You'll need an SLE cluster. They're the only ones with the volt gauge and DIC, other than the GXP which has a different speedometer. Then you'll want to swap the chip in the back so your odometer reads correctly.

Ys the whole cluster, the individual parts aren't really serviceable. And im not exactly sure where the chip is but urls somewhere on the back of the instrument cluster iIRC

Where can I get one and how much do they usually cost?

Is it something I can do or is it something someone with much experience must do?

Not true.

It seems that 2003-2006 GM clusters had frequent stepper motor failures that caused haywire gauges and dead speedometers, etc. I recently had my cluster overhauled with all new, revised design (look for x25.589 motors) stepper motors and bulbs since I had lost speedo, tach, and coolant temp. I had a local guy do it for $100. Stepper motors can be had for much cheaper on eBay, but I wasn't about to trust myself with the work. If you're good with a soldering iron and electronics, it may be feasibly to DIY.

I can't attest to the quality of these guys, but some info can be found here:

The Speedometer went back to normal now :/

I think its going to mess up again soon. Also another thing was, my Reset button on my DIC wasnt working for like 1 hour and then it worked.

The car only has 35k so I dont see how these problems can occur this fast.

various failures happen at random sometimes, I n 1996 i bought a Nissan Pickup and within the first 120 miles the rear O2 sensor went out...

May double check your alternator to verify that it is putting out the right voltage. when they aren't up to snuff they cause weird things to happen... My digi speedo in my 88 Grand prix went from 25 to 77 to 45 to 199 and I was doing maybe 35 at the time.

Haha, 199? Put that on YouTube. If I had a dollar for every idiot that has posted a video of their speedo reading KM/H in an attempt to get people to believe they're doing 140+ mph, I could quit my job and retire early.

Wasnt the battery.

I looked for the SLE Cluster on Ebay, Rockauto and other sites and didnt find none. They only have after market stuff.

I really wanted to put the GXP Cluster on there but where can I find one of those anyways?

I really need to get it fixed asap.

Also, is there any writeup to show how to DIY because I've never done somthing like this.

Thanks in advance Pontiac Bonneville Club members.
