Newest Addition to the fleet: 1999 Freightliner Day Cab

Post by 00Beast »

So as some of you guys know, we have a water problem on our farm. Our wells can't keep up with the demand from the hogs, and so we've been hauling water in with a poly tank on a trailer behind the 05 2500 HD Duramax to a large storage tank on the farm, but that's not really safe, it only has surge brakes, etc. We've pretty much determined there isn't a good well on our farm, so we're going the other route.

On Tuesday my dad drove to Luverne MN and bought a 6200 gallon Stainless Tank trailer (going to get it tomorrow or thurs), and today we picked up this beast. It's a 99 Freightliner Day Cab truck, has the M11 Cummins and a 10 speed Eaton transmission. The dealer had 4 very similar, and we picked this one since this one had the best tires and a stereo that didn't suck terribly, LOL. The truck had a few things done to it, namely a new injector, and it appears an oil change and air filter at least. It's got 517,600 miles on it, so it's not new, but for 5k miles a year we'll put on it, it should last a LONG time. The best part is that since it's for Farm Use, I don't need a CDL to drive it.

Only mods for now will be LED lights on the trailer, the req'd decals on the doors and replacing the busted speaker, thinking a wal-mart special for 2 speakers and a HU with iPod in, LOL. It also needs a Fire Extinguisher mounted in the cab.

I know Jerry, it's silly. However, the law is the law and the DOT loves to write tickets for violations like that. They don't know I'm always gonna haul water with it, and who knows, maybe we'll haul grain with it eventually.

Yeah the fire extinguisher is kinda stupid but is there for good reason.

My grandpa was having a garage built and the dumptruck that was bringing the gravel the brakes burst into flames in his yard.

BTW. Cool new toy. I think that would be fun to drive

00Beast, awesome new ride.

On a side note, my father drives a Kenworth T2000 (I think) during the day and has a small hog farm as well. Been a family farm for years and years but hard to make it that way, in Ohio at least, any longer. Nice to see a fellow hog farmer making it.

Wow...we have that exact truck. 2000 FLD 112 daycab, cummins, 10spd eaton, white, same wheelbase, tanks, same everything except the stripe. My stereo did suck terribly and i put Polk db's in it and a delco headunit.

I don't have any pictures of it cause it's not green or yellow.

You DO have to have a CDL physical. I got a $100 ticket for that.

Uhh, Ed, have you ever driven a 10 speed before? I've seen videos of people operating a semi transmission before and it is WEIRD. BTW, any interior shots?

10 speeds are simple. Shift 1-5, flip to high range, go back to first and do it again. You don't even have to clutch.

Yeah yeah Cody, I'll grab a pic at the co-op for you tomorrow...

Peter, what seems weird is the split rear end trucks, where you split each gear. Our grain truck is like that, but it's not bad at all.

JG2000, my parents contract-raise (we care for them and own the buildings, don't own the pigs) 10,000 pigs plus my dad works for the company who owns them, so we do alright, lol.

Drove with my Grandpa to Luverne MN (2.5 hours each way) to get the trailer this afternoon. The trailer is a 6200 Gallon insulated retired-Milk trailer that we got for hauling water. Then my dad and I went and got a load of water. No problems at all, truck handled the trip and all 80,000 lbs of truck, trailer and water like a champ.

Same here in ohio, contract-raise about 5,000 at a time for Heimerl Farms but own the building. My dad has been considering putting up a second building to hold another 5,000 but the EPA regulations are just ridiculous.
http://heimerlfarms.com/

By split-rear end trucks, do you mean shifting from 1st-gear low to 1st-gear high then, 2nd-gear low to 2nd-gear high and so on? I always thought that is how those transmissions worked? I'm sure it would be tricky getting used to the small button/lever on the stick but easy after you do it a few times.

No we have not. How different is it than a regular physical, other than the doctor making a statement saying we're safe for driving?

I honestly don't know any farmers in this area who have gotten them, or who have gotten ticketed for it. MN doesn't make its laws really clear anywhere online....

It's not very different, I got mine last year to drive the dump truck for landscaping. I think it cost like $92 to get it done (my employer reimbursed me) and it is good for 2 years. If you (or your dad) are going to ever be driving near a more heavily populated area were the DOT or highway patrol may be in higher numbers I would recommend getting it. The exam is a lot cheaper than a ticket.

Only difference from a regular physical is that the doctors office fills out a CDL physical form and only checks you for things required on the form. My family doctor wanted $150 to do it, so i talked to truck drivers and found out about a place in town that specializes in CDLs and it cost $47.
