remote start

hi guys, im hoping someone here has installed a remote start or has had a similar issue to mine. first ill give some background info:
the remote start is a viper 5701.
the regular alarm and door unlock/lock part of the alarm works fine. when it comes to the remote start, ive bypassed the VATS system at the Theft deterent module behind the glove box. i used a 4 wire bypass from http://www.xdponline.com/index.php?main ... 8f5b90c20f --this seems to be working right as the car will still crank and stay running even with TDM disconnected.

the wires i used for the remote start are
h3/1 -- (+) IGNITION 1 INPUT/OUTPUT -- connected to PINK at the ignition switch
h3/3 -- ACCESSORY OUTPUT -- connected to ORANGE at ignition switch
h3/4 -- (+) STARTER OUTPUT (CAR SIDE OF THE STARTER KILL WIRE) -- connected to yellow
h3/5 -- (+) STARTER INPUT (KEY SIDE OF THE STARTER KILL WIRE) -- connected to yellow
h3/6 -- (+) FUSED (30A) IGNITION 1 INPUT -- connected to RED at ignition switch
h3/9 -- FUSED (30A) ACCESSORY/STARTER INPUT -- connected to RED at ignition switch

i also connected the brake light wire to the blue wire at the brake switch, the neutral safety switch is grounded to the black ground wire of the alarm h1/5 harness. i didnt connect the hood pin or tach wire as i thought they wouldn't be immediately necessary to get the system working. the factory alarm disarm wire is connected to the light green wire at the drivers kick panel.

i think those are the most basic necessary connections needed to get the remote start working as well as the on/off switch and setting the system to auto transmission mode.

my problem is that the remote start will start the car, but then it will randomly shut down by itself, there will be about a 3 second pause and it will restart itself. this process will continue until i press the remote start button again to turn it off. there is also no set amount of time before it will shut down and restart itself. it can shutdown a couple seconds after it starts or it can shut down 5 mins after its been running. so the interval between running and shutting down is not consistent. but it never reaches the default 12min shut down timer.

the remote start itself seems to work properly; stepping on the break shuts it down and i can even drive the car press RS button and take the key out and it will keep running.

any ideas why it is randomly shutting down?

the hood pin is a ground that when depressed, breaks that ground and tells the car no to start. it is so if your under the hood working it will be grounded out and tell the starter not to start. if it's working without it i'm amazed.

the tach wire i believe has to be shutoff on the box. if not it will not work properly because it will be looking for the input from the tach...

The hood pin grounds out when the hood is opened, yes, but if the hood pin wire isn't connected to the switch the remote start will think the hood is closed. For safety of yourself and others this wire really needs to be connected.

You have to connect the tach wire, I'm most certain that is what's causing your random shutdowns. The remote starter needs to know when the car is running, otherwise it will shut the ignition down and try starting the car again.

im still going to connect the hood pin. i knew it was primarily for safety reasons so i didnt connect it yet to test operation. i was under the impression that the tach wire isnt needed for automatic transmissions though and the system is set for virtual tach. ill go connect this wire and see what happens. also, am i supposed to leave the TDM module connected even after its been bypassed or can it be removed from the car completely?

the ones i installed required the hood pin. no bypassing it.

im having trouble finding the tach signal wire at the pcm. the factory service manual shows a white ignition control wire going to an 8 way ignition harness. and that connector is supposed to have a white tach signal wire. am i suppose to tap into the ignition control wire, or where can i find the 8 way harness connector? any help is much appreciated.

:dontknow: don't know if this will help you out. it's where i get all my wiring diagrams for my installs.

best i can do is go to the shop and get the wiring diagram. i sthere more than one purple/white wire? if so, i'll look it up tomorrow while i'm up there.

I wired my remote start to the tach wire on the back of the cluster on my 92, worked mint.

i would have to remove the whole dash for that wouldnt i? that sounds like a lot more work than getting it from the ignition module.

No the whole dash doesn't need to come out, just the trim and the cluster if I recall correctly. You do it however you like, I was just giving you other options. ;)

i hope i didnt come off sounding rude or something, i was just wondering if that wouldnt require more work than getting it from the ignition module. thanks for your input though.

No, you didn't offend me, I wasn't trying to offend you either #-o. I never tried wiring to the ignition module, just went straight to the tach guage so I can't verify the difference for you, sorry.

if it's easier to get to and to track down then go that route, the one dpcookson suggested.

are there more than one of those color wires at the location it's telling you to hook your wire up too? if there isn't it should be fairly simple. i forgot to look while at the shop so i apologize.

yea, theres more than 1 white wire at the pcm. the factory service manual doesnt show one as being the tach signal. closest white one is for something ignition related. sorry i cant be more specific right now, i dont have the manual with me right now.

It could be a purple wire with a white stripe.

i wish i had my phone, i would take a picture of the factory service manual diagram. maybe im reading it wrong. i know the bull dog security site says purple/white or white. but the manual says purple/white is a fuel control wire. the manual is for my year, 93, so im assuming the info in it should be accurate to my car. the white wire which i think is what i will need is circuit 121 but the PCM doesnt show a pin out for that circuit except for on an "8-way ignition jumper harness connector." so it seems it might not actually be a wire on one of the PCM connectors i need to tap into. what im going to do is just try to find a connector with 8 wires that match the diagram near the PCM.

ive been putting this off for a while now cuz its such a pain working under there and its been really hot. i still need to wire in the remote trunk release so when i get to doing that, ill look for that connector and let you guys know what i find. im feeling really confident that ill find the wire on a separate connector from the PCM.

I've bypassed the VATS in my 99 bonneville ssei using some resistors a while back when it wouldn't start, I was wondering if I would still need one of those bypass modules or one of those transponder things to install a remote start in my car?
