I'm sure I've heard things similar to that. I've heard that running the fuel low exposes the pump and it runs hotter, thereby wearing it out quicker, but I honestly don't know and would take that little tidbit of information with a grain of salt. Could just be a mechanical myth.

No. You should only hear it if you lay on the ground near the rear of the car with the engine off. When you have someone key on, you should hear it prime.

Keeping the fuel pump submerged in fuel will prolong its life, but it has a definite life and will eventually fail. Some last less than 100k miles, some many more. It's luck of the draw.

Was always taught by my father, A mechanic all his life, to fill up at 1/4 tank. Reason being, Fuel cools the pump. Running the tank really low adds heat to the pump, then fuel up and splash cold fuel all over it. The hot to cold fries pumps more often than one would think.

I work at a gas station, and at least once a week a car has to be towed away from the pumps... Seems to make sense to me!

thats what my dad says to me and he has his own shop too.
1/4 tank is the lowest you'll car shuld have.

mine has almost 300k and still has original fuel pump and lines.
ive been, since havin the car, taken after wat my dad has done, and kept it above a quarter tank or try too
