Crankshaft Position Sensor

Post by TheEngineer »

Where is it located on the L36? Mine appears to be on its way out and I would prefer to replace it before it leaves me stranded on a freeway somewhere.

I am pretty sure that it is behind the harmonic balancer bolted to the timing cover.

What do you mean it appears to be on it's way out? What are your symptoms?

A check engine light implicating the sensor for starters, followed more recently by occassional dead spots while driving or idling. These dead spots are, for now, just momentary, although when they happen at idle they cause the car to stall. It starts right back up afterward, but that won't always be the case. And it is happening more and more often. It's only a matter of time before it doesn't start again.

I recently had the same/similar problem with my 94 SE. Turned out to be a melted connection at the heater/AC blower motor. I know, that sounds odd, but it is easy to check. Once I replaced the pigtail to the blower motor, and cleaned the connections on the motor itself, my car ran just fine.

Don't know WHY this caused my problem, but "been there-done that"!

Maybe a common ground source shorting?

Please keep us updated.

Well that looks awful. Is that pulley pressed on or just bolted?

Bolted and pressed. You need a 24mm socket for the bolt, it will take a LOT of torque. The pulley comes off with a harmonic balancer puller (rent at parts store), and you'll need to get some M6-90mm bolts (the ones that come in the kit will NOT work), and washers. Once the pulley is off, you'll pull that plastic shroud out of the way, and you'll have full access to the crank sensor.
