SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH!

my brakes squeal horribly.... just replaced pads and rotors with NAPA premium ceramic pads and NAPA premium rotors..... so much for getting the "quality" parts
i told them at the parts store that i didn't want ceramic because everyone i know that has them, their brakes squeak terribly.... but that was all they had for my car.
its embarrassing every time i stop.
what gives? how can i make them stop?

Check the rotor backing plate and make sure it is not rubbing on the rotor. There have been a few of us, myself included, with this issue lately after replacing both rotors and pads.

Ours don't do it when you hit the brakes hard, and I can see where it is rubbing on the back of the rotor... I just haven't had time to pull the wheel off and straighten it out yet...
Did you use any caliper grease on the ears of the pads and where it contacts the caliper and piston?

I've been using ceramic pads since the OE's came off at 50k and I've never had a squeal. I have them on the wife's car as well. Again, they never squeal.

yeah i greased the sh*t out of them on the ears and where it contacts the pistons, in hopes it would prevent squealing
wonder why ours all squeal? one is a 00 regal gs and the other a 98 park ultra.. both did new ceramic pads and rotors...

I just recently replaced the rotors and pads. The rotors were AC Delco and the pads were Duralast Gold ceramics. These were the second set of Duralast Golds I've used on this car. The first set I got 56k miles out of them. I had never replaced the rotors until this last time.

I would suggest trying to bed the pads back in. Find a nice long country road. Make sure you didn't bend the metal squeal strips so that they hit the rotor already.

i tried to bed the brakes again. thats why i went for a drive earlier.
funny thing is they didnt start squealing until a couple days after i put them in...

I have had ceramics for years and love them. Longer rotor life and no brake dust are major benefits.
Mine squeal when it is super cold out, but once they warm up its fine.
I would say you have something else wrong, not the brakes.

what else could it be? i didnt touch anything but the brakes...
i think im gonna take the pads back to Napa and exchange them for the same ones and see if the squeal goes away...

If you are going to go through all the trouble of taking the pads off, first check out the backing plate behind the rotor. I am betting that is what the problem is.

FYI, it's not grease that you put on the pads where it (the back of the pad) makes contact with the caliper/piston. It's an anti-squeel compound that actually solidifies almost into a rubbery consistency once it dries, that quells the small vibrations/movement made when you engage the brakes. If you put actual grease on there, no wonder it squeels!
That's the squeel you hear. It's not the quality of the pads, rotors, and what not wearing together on their wear surfaces! IT's the small but very rapid vibrations/movements in the pad, particularly under light braking that's making the squeel/screech. You need this stuff. CRC makes it, it's orange, and you can get it at any auto parts store.

4 ounce bottle will last you a long time, unless you do brake jobs everyday;

That stuff works great. What I used on dad's GXP, not a sound from the brakes. My EBC pads actually came with little stick-on pads that do the same thing.

they guy at the parts counter told me to put grease on the back of the pad... i thought that was odd... but did it anyways.
i used a similar product on my SSEI and it worked great. sad thing is i actually had some when i replaced my pads. didnt think of it at the time
ill have to buy some since i dont plan on goin back up north for a while...
maybe i can convince a tech at work to use his tools and hoist

well today i pulled the wheels off and removed the pads.
their were no tabs hitting the rotor.
Their is no backing plate, so that rubbing is out of the picture.
I took emery cloth and a block of wood and cleaned the glaze off the pads. thats what the techs i talked to said to do. re greased the tabs/ears on the pads (with silicone brake grease just like before) and put on disc bake quiet on the back of the pads..... re-"bed" the pads
they still squeak!
I'm getting really pissed at my brakes!
